Weather delays hit Phila. airport

Philadelphia International Airport was experiencing weather-related arrival and departure delays Wednesday, with arriving flights averaging delays of up to two hours due to low clouds and some rain, said airport spokeswoman Victoria Lupica.

The US Airways hub control center at the airport said the Federal Aviation Administration has implemented a ground delay program for Philadelphia, with arrival delays of up to 111 minutes possible, said airline spokesman Todd Lehmacher. "Heavy rain that is forecast Wednesday afternoon could impact that further," he said.

Travelers are advised to check flight status with individual airlines, visit www.phl.org, or call the toll-free flight information number: 1-800-PHL-GATE, Lupica said.

US Airways, which handles 70 percent of the flights in Philadelphia, canceled 48 express, or commuter, flights, but has not canceled any larger "mainline" aircraft departures or arrivals, Lehmacher said.

US Airways' trans-Atlantic flights were all running early Wednesday from Europe "so that will help get them in here early with the weather," Lehmacher said.
