Pa. Boys: Wed. Pa. boys: Central leading track championships

Central got off to a roaring start Wednesday at the Public League Track and Field Championships at Johnston Stadium in Mount Airy.

The Lancers won four of the first six finals contested on Day 1.

Walt Pegues claimed two championships. He leaped 22 feet, 7 inches to capture the long jump, and he won the triple jump with a mark of 43-21/2.

Sam Reid won the discus with a throw of 151-10, and Jonathon Henderson took gold in the javelin with a heave of 142-7.

In the day's other final, Masterman's Joseph Previdi and Julian Roessler ran first and second in the 3,200 meters.

The championships continue Thursday at Northeast.

Central League Championships. Radnor won three events at Lower Merion. Karl Stark took the pole vault (13-0), and Eric Von Hertsenberg won the shot put with a toss of 50-73/4.

Radnor's Connor Holm won the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 20.55 seconds.

Springfield (Delco) claimed titles in two field events. Nick Apostolu won the discus with a throw of 136-2, and Chris Mallee took the javelin at 155-1.

In the 800, Ramsey Kerkula of Upper Darby edged Penncrest's Evan Emanuel by .12 of a second. Kerkula crossed the line in 1:55.81.

Baseball

Bay To hit a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning, and host Neumann-Goretti beat Archbishop Carroll, 5-4, and clinched a share of first place in the Catholic League Blue. To went 3 for 4.

Archbishop Wood also earned a share of first by beating visiting Lansdale Catholic, 13-3. Matt Cumiskey went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs. Matt Mandes went 2 for 3 and scored twice.

Bicentennial Independence. Anthony Vlahovic's two-run double in the sixth broke a tie and helped New Hope-Solebury down visiting Bristol, 5-2. Joe Stadler went 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Central. Ben Faso's two-out hit to right-center in the top of the seventh scored two runs, and Garnet Valley downed Conestoga, 7-5.

Scott McKenna allowed one hit over three innings, and Haverford High topped Upper Darby, 15-0. Nick Cerelli went 2 for 4 with a double, four RBIs, and two runs.

Lacrosse

Evan Wolf scored seven times to lead Lower Merion to an 11-10 win at Pope John Paul II in a nonleague game.

Michael Major's five goals paced Holy Ghost Prep in a 16-7 defeat of visiting Central Bucks South.
