A rape suspect was killed early Tuesday when the car he was driving crashed into a wall in Philadelphia's Kensington section.

According to police, at 1:06 a.m., police responded to a 911 call about a rape in progress in the 2600 block of Collins Street.

There they met a 26-year-old woman who said that a few minutes earlier, she had been assaulted inside a vehicle by a man whom she did not know and was able to escape, police said.

About 12 minutes later, while police were gathering information at the scene, the rape suspect was seen speeding in a 2004 Nissan Altima northbound in the 3200 block of Boudinot Street, police said.

The car then crashed into a concrete wall in the 400 block of Westmoreland Street, where the driver - identified as Vincent Pellegrino, 24, of the 2600 block of East Seltzer Street - was killed.

The crash and the assault remain under investigation, police said.
