Pa. Boys: Wed. Pa. boys: Long, Pennridge roll

By the time Dan Long clubbed his second home run Wednesday, the matter had all but been decided. That did not stop the sophomore slugger from adding the cherry on top.

Long went 2 for 3 with two home runs and drove in six runs to lead Pennridge to an 8-0 victory at Strath Haven in the second round of the District 1 Class AAAA baseball tournament. Long hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and a two-run shot in the seventh.

Eric Wesolowski faced two batters over the minimum in a three-hitter. He struck out nine. Jeff Roedell went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Pennridge is the North sixth seed; Strath Haven was the South second seed. In other second-round games:

Boyertown 3, Radnor 0 - Tyler Bauman fired a one-hitter, striking out six, and the North second seed held off the visiting seventh seed from the South.

Spring-Ford 7, Avon Grove 6 - Cam Simmons pitched 12/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn the win for Spring-Ford, the North fourth seed, over the South fifth seed. David Gulati went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Connor Kelmann went 2 for 3 with two runs.

Cheltenham 2, Great Valley 0 - Kevin Graham's two-run double in the first inning was all host Cheltenham, the top North seed, needed to defeat the South eighth seed.

Conestoga 13, Unionville 3 - Tom Richter and Austin Shirley each had three hits and three RBIs to pace the South fourth seed over the visiting, North No. 12 seed.

Methacton 12, Garnet Valley 5 - Jim Shomberg went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to power Methacton, the North seventh seed, to a win at the South second seed. Kyle Lowery was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

District 1 Class AA Baseball Semifinals

Senior righthander David Cherkowsky dominated as top seed New Hope Solebury rolled past visiting, No. 4 Valley Forge Military, 10-0. Cherkowsky struck out 11 and walked one in a one-hitter.

Public League Baseball Finals

Melvin Vargas made two big catches in right field, including one in the top of the seventh to preserve Washington's 9-8 win over visiting Central in the Class AAAA championship game. Vargas also had two hits. Roger Hanson hit a two-run homer.

Class AAA. Rob Henry hit two two-run doubles, and Franklin Towne Charter thumped Boys' Latin, 11-1, at Ashburn Field.

Henry went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Christian Diaz struck out seven in a five-inning one-hitter.

Class AA. Sophomores Shane McGrody and Shawn Hayes led host Philadelphia Academy Charter to its first Class AA title with a 9-5 triumph over Prep Charter. McGrody went 3 for 4 with two runs, and Hayes was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Class A. Nick Picoli, Liam Shanahan, and Greg Whitehorn hit consecutive doubles in a five-run second inning, and Masterman held on to beat GAMP, 5-4, at Ashburn.

Lacrosse

Four area seniors were named to the Under Armour All-American team: defenders Connor Keating (Haverford School) and Greg Pelton (Malvern Prep), attack Tanner Peck (Avon Grove), and goalie William Schreiner (Avon Grove). They will play in the Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic on July 12 at Towson.
