Thurs. Pa. girls: Central takes Public League title

Posted: May 24, 2014

Sarah Rosenberg does not run the bases - often, at least. For the star pitcher on the Central softball team, it is just too risky.

But strange circumstances led to the senior's scoring the most important run of the season Thursday at Philadelphia University.

Serving as a pinch-runner for herself, of all things, Rosenberg slid across home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Central a 6-5 win over Franklin Towne Charter and claim the Lancers' second Public League championship in three years.

Rosenberg led off the seventh with a single. As per usual, coach Richard Kirby lifted her for courtesy runner Sanie Auguste, the fastest player on the team. Auguste stole second, but injured herself on the slide.

"I conferred with my captain about what my options were. I can't get Sarah hurt, but she's our best option," Kirby said. "I didn't have a lot of speed left on the bench."

Rosenberg reentered, and was fast enough to score from second on Jada Arrington's line-drive single to left field. Arrington, a freshman cleanup hitter, went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Meghan Tezik doubled and drove in two runs.

Rosenberg, who allowed just one earned run, moved to 35-7 in her career. She has 394 strikeouts in three seasons.

Maggie Friel and Abby Lord each scored twice, and Conestoga earned a state-tournament berth by beating Downingtown East, 15-10, at Downingtown West in the District 1 Class AAA fifth-place game.
