The world finals of the 35th annual "Odyssey of the Mind," an international problem-solving competition, are set to begin Tuesday in Ames, Iowa, and several local schools have teams participating.

Among the teams listed for the competition that runs through June 1 are squads from Abington, North Penn, New Hope-Solebury, Owen J. Roberts, Tredyffrin Easttown, Masterman, St. Basil Academy in Kimberton, Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in North Wales, and Montgomery Area Elementary School.

Odyssey of the Mind challenges students to solve problems such as building complex mechanical devices or creating their own unique interpretations of literary classics.

Chris Palochak, the coach for the Owen J. Roberts High School and Vincent Elementary teams, said his students are looking forward to the competition.

"It's sort of like a second Christmas for them," he said.

More than 800 teams are expected to take part in the competition at Iowa State University.
