Two people were killed Monday afternoon when a car crashed head-on into a NJ Transit bus near Atlantic City, police said.

The accident, which also injured six people on the bus, happened shortly before 2 p.m. on North Franklin Boulevard in Pleasantville when a Toyota Camry swerved into the path of the bus, which was going in the opposite direction. The bus then crashed into a pole, authorities said.

Two of the Camry's six occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, Pleasantville Police Sgt. Emory Silipigni said. The driver and three passengers were taken to a local hospital. None of the victims' names was released Monday.

The Route 502 bus was headed to the Hamilton Mall from the Atlantic City bus terminal, according to NJ Transit spokesman John Durso. Durso said the bus driver and five passengers sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. They were being treated at a local hospital.

The accident is under investigation, and police ask that any witnesses call them at 609-641-6100.
