Pa. Boys: Tues. Pa. boys: Springfield (M) grabs district crown

Posted: May 29, 2014

The numbers for Marten Pauwels would look improbable for batting practice, let alone playoff baseball. Yet, the statistics do not lie: The senior slugger from Springfield (Montco) turned the District 1 Class AA tournament into his playground.

Pauwels put up another huge performance Tuesday as Springfield claimed its fourth straight championship by beating New Hope-Solebury, 8-6, at Cairn University.

Pauwels went 3 for 5 with a triple, a home run, and five RBIs. In two playoff games, he was 6 for 8 with seven RBIs and three extra-base hits.

Jeff Hammons worked two scoreless innings to earn the save for winner Ed Bacino. Chris Binet doubled twice.

District 1 Class AAAA Semifinals

Boyertown defeated Spring-Ford, 6-0, in a rain-shortened game at Immaculata. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth.

Tyler Bauman did not allow a hit to Spring-Ford, the North fourth seed. Boyertown, the North second seed, has not given up a run in three playoff games. The Bears previously shut out Radnor and Pennridge.

Boyertown will have to wait an extra day to find out its championship-game opponent. The other semifinal was suspended with Conestoga leading Methacton, 3-1, in the top of the fifth. The game will resume at Spring-Ford at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
