Pa. Girls: Wed. Pa. girls: Springfield gets past Downingtown East

Emily Santana scored five goals to help Springfield (Delco) edge Downingtown East, 11-8, in the first round of the PIAA state girls' lacrosse tournament Wednesday at West Chester East.

The junior added an assist and eight draw controls. Kate Ryan scored two goals and had an assist, and Cailyn Gormley deposited two goals for Springfield.

Kate Bedard recorded 10 saves to get the win in net.

In other first-rounders:

Great Valley 18, Manheim Township 6 - Brittany Edwards scored seven goals to lead the Patriots to the rout at Exeter. Jessica Boyle had six points, scoring five goals and recording an assist. Goalie Mia Tornetta had five saves.

Harriton 11, Archbishop Carroll 9 - Laura Lasprogata scored three of her four goals in the second half to lead the Rams to victory at Neumann University.

Garnet Valley 13, Conestoga 11 - Leading by 11-10 with less than a minute left, Garnet Valley added two insurance goals and held off the Pioneers at West Chester East.

The Jaguars will play Harriton in the quarterfinals Saturday at a time and site to be determined.
