Pa. Girls: Sat. Pa. girls: Great Valley, Springfield roll in quarterfinals

Posted: June 02, 2014

It needed some time to get started, but once it did, Great Valley's offense came out firing.

After missing a lot of opportunities in the first 10 minutes, the Patriots finished with 16 first-half goals en route to a 20-2 rout of Danville on Saturday in a PIAA girls' lacrosse quarterfinal at Cumberland Valley.

"We were winning draw controls, but had trouble putting the ball in the net," Patriots coach Joe Tornetta said. "But we started to pick things up and got a lot of contribution from our players."

One of the biggest contributors was La Salle recruit Brittany Edwards. The senior netted a team-high seven goals, all in the first half.

"She has been our top scorer and is one of our leaders," Tornetta said. "She's definitely one of the pieces to the puzzle, but today was a total team effort."

Courtney Cortese scored twice and had a pair of assists. Linnea Hughes added a goal and three assists. Lindsay Miller and Olivia Muscella each tallied twice.

Great Valley will face Springfield (Delco) in the PIAA semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday at West Chester Henderson.

In other quarterfinal action:

Springfield (Delco) 12, Lancaster Country Day 4 - Emily Santana powered Springfield to victory at Exeter Township. The junior led the Cougars with seven goals.

Aly Gormley recorded a hat trick for Springfield. Emily Paulus added a goal and an assist.
