Senior Matt Hatch, a fleet left winger who helped Union College win the NCAA national championship this season, signed a free-agent contract Tuesday with the Flyers' top affiliate and will play for Lehigh Valley in the AHL.

"He's a gritty kid with high-end speed," Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said.

Hatch, 24, is the second player from Union in the Flyers' organization, joining highly touted defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere.

Hatch had 13 goals this season, then added four more in the postseason. In 148 career games, the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder had 34 goals and 39 assists. He was one of the team's top penalty killers.

Four players from Union have signed with NHL teams or their affiliates.

Hextall, a former assistant GM with Los Angeles, said he was "absolutely excited about the Kings being in the Finals. I have a lot of good friends there and built a lot of good relationships."

Hextall declined picking the winner but admitted he was "cheering for one team."

"L.A. has showed a lot of resolve, and so have the Rangers," he said. "They're two very good teams with solid defensive systems."
