Posted: June 07, 2014

The Souderton softball players sprinted to the banks of the Yellow Breeches Creek and waded into it until they were knee deep. Some still wore their bright red socks. They had plenty to celebrate Thursday after advancing to their first state semifinal in nearly a decade.

The Indians built a five-run lead and hung on to beat Central Mountain, 6-5, in a PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinal at Messiah College.

Morgan Yoder had a two-run single and Angie Carty drove in a run with a bunt single to give Souderton a 6-1 lead in the sixth.

Central Mountain got back into the game by scoring four unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.

Paige Shelly hit a solo home run for Souderton, which will play Dubois on Monday.

Parkland 3, Avon Grove 0 - Taylor Volko reached on an infield single in the sixth inning to give Avon Grove its lone hit in a loss at Souderton.

Despite pitching in a losing effort, Avon Grove's Maggie Balint was named the Gatorade softball player of the year in Pennsylvania.

The sophomore righthander amassed more than 350 strikeouts this season.
