Another late loss for Soul

Posted: June 17, 2014

PITTSBURGH'S Julian Rauch kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired on Saturday to hand the Soul another heartbreaking loss, 57-56.

Philadelphia, the two-time defending conference champion, fell to 6-7 and are a game back of Tampa Bay for the final playoff spot. The lead actually is larger since the Storm hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The disappointing defeat overshadowed a career game by wide receiver Emery Sammons, who tied a franchise record with 14 catches, three for touchdowns.

The Soul lost last week when it was outscored by Tampa Bay, 22-0, in the final quarter. In late May, Philadelphia lost to Cleveland on a touchdown at the buzzer.

As tight as the Soul's chase is for an American Conference postseason bid, the race in the National Conference race is a joke. Los Angeles, with a 3-9 record, holds a half-game lead over Portland.

The Soul hosts Cleveland (11-1) on Saturday at 6 p.m.
