Sixers keep Wiggins under wraps

Posted: June 18, 2014

YES, FORMER Kansas star Andrew Wiggins was in town visiting with the 76ers. Sources say he worked out for the team on Sunday and got a physical and met with team higher-ups yesterday.

The Sixers, however, don't want anyone to know, so keep it to yourself.

Wiggins wasn't permitted to speak with the media or comment on whether he wants to play here, how his visit went, or what he thinks about coach Brett Brown. The team, comically, kept the 6-8 swingman from speaking to a small gathering of media. He left the practice facility at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine through a back door, where he climbed into a black Surburban with Nerlens Noel and was whisked past reporters and a few autograph seekers without acknowledgment.

A text message to Sixers public relations director Mike Preston went unanswered.

Reporters originally gathered outside of the entrance that leads to the gymnasium, but were told by PCOM security they could not be on campus property. Reporters then moved down the long driveway next to a parking garage, but again were told by security to move away from the campus. The next move was down to the sidewalk next to the driveway just off Monument Avenue, but that also wasn't good enough for security, who this time brought in a Philadelphia police officer who instructed the media to retreat to the street.

Shortly after, a black limo dropped Wiggins at the entrance to the gym. The limo left, replaced by the Surburban. A short time later the Surburban went to the back exit of the gym, waited for about a half-hour, then took Wiggins and Noel away.

In years past, potential draft picks worked out for the Sixers then were made available to the media. In other cities, they still are. But general manager Sam Hinkie and company have decided to keep the media, and thus the fans, in the dark for this draft, the most important and exciting in recent history.
