Suit: Bedbugs 'attacked' woman at Wissahickon movie theater

AN EAST Germantown woman probably won't be sleeping tight any time soon, to hear her tell it.

Sabrina Hammond, who lives on Nedro Avenue near 19th Street, filed a civil suit Monday in Common Pleas Court, claiming she was "aggressively attacked and bitten" by bedbugs at a Wissahickon movie theater last September.

In the suit, Hammond says the bugs bit her on the buttocks and legs while she was watching a movie at the United Artists Theater on Main Street near Ridge Avenue.

The bites caused a "severe shock to the nerves and nervous system" that has prevented her from completing her "daily duties," leaving her with "great financial damage and loss," according to the complaint filed in the case.

Those damages include "various sums of money" paid for medicine and medical treatment for the bites, according to the complaint. Hammond is asking for $50,000 in damages from the theater.

Hammond didn't return a call for comment last night. Her lawsuit doesn't specify which movie she was watching when the bedbugs bit, but chances are good that it was "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2," which was on two of the theater's six screens that weekend.

Her lawyer, Lawrence G. Metzger, declined to comment, saying it didn't seem "appropriate to discuss the matter at this time."

Staff at the theater referred a reporter to Regal Entertainment Group, the firm that operates the facility. A spokesman for the Tennessee-based firm did not return a request for comment last night.

An arbitration hearing in the case is scheduled for March 16, according to court records.
