Gord Murphy, who began his NHL career as a Flyers defenseman, is returning to the team as an assistant coach.

John Paddock will not return as an assistant next season, general manager Ron Hextall said.

Murphy, 47, has been an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers and the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He played for the Flyers from 1988 to '92, when he was sent to Boston in a multiplayer trade. He also played with Atlanta and Florida in a career that lasted 14 seasons.

"I really look forward to working with and mentoring the defensemen every day by having them continue to improve and get the Flyers to where we all want to be," said Murphy, who had 85 goals and 238 assists in 862 NHL games.

Paddock was a Flyers assistant last season after serving as assistant general manager and director of player personnel.
