A 71-year-old man was robbed and beaten in front of his South Philadelphia home early Tuesday, police said.

The man was sitting on the front steps of his home on the 1500 block of Moore Street just after 5 a.m. when two men in their 20s approached.

One remained on the north side of the street while the other pushed the victim against the wall, struck him with a gun, and grabbed his backpack, which contained only food.

The attacker never fired his gun. After the robbery, he fled west on Moore with the younger man, then north onto 16th Street.

Police found the victim bleeding from wounds on the top and back of his head, as well as on his right arm.

Paramedics drove him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was reportedly in good condition by the late morning and was expected to be released by late afternoon.

Police cited robbery as a motive for the attack. The two suspects remain at large.
