Bucks HR department gets interim director

Bucks County's deputy human resources director will be the department's interim leader following the suspension of its longtime director, the county's chief operating officer, Brian Hessenthaler, said Friday.

Travis Monroe will take over for Meredith Dolan, suspended indefinitely following grand jury findings that "lax" department practices had cost the county at least $450,000, Hessenthaler said.

Monroe's title will not change, he said, adding that the county is reviewing how other human-resources departments handle their duties. He said that decisions about the department's future - including a permanent director - will not be made until that review is complete. He said he did not expect Dolan to return.

A grand jury report released last week by the Bucks County District Attorney's Office found that 39 people had improperly received county health benefits, and that premium payments were made on behalf of 29 of them.

Hessenthaler said that the county already has taken steps to prevent similar mishaps, such as requiring health-plan recipients to complete forms listing their dependents each year, and beefing up requirements on documentation of various life changes.

Hessenthaler called Monroe "a steady influence," and said, "I think he's a good choice to lead us through this process."
