The Senate on Monday unanimously confirmed the nomination of Dechert L.L.P. lawyer Cheryl A. Krause to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Krause, 46, a former assistant U.S. attorney in Manhattan and a clerk for Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy after graduating from law school, was nominated by President Obama in February.

As a litigator at Dechert, Krause represented major banking institutions, media companies, private equity firms, and other interests in various government investigations. She also handled large-scale internal investigations for companies and argued a number of appeals court cases.

Before Monday's vote, she had to undergo stringent winnowing and win the support of Pennsylvania's senators, Pat Toomey, a Republican, and Robert P. Casey, a Democrat.

"I am humbled and grateful to President Obama and the Senate, and in particular to Sens. Casey and Toomey, for this opportunity to return to public service and am deeply honored to join the esteemed bench of this court," Krause said in a statement released by Dechert.

The Third Circuit is based in Philadelphia and handles appeals from federal district court decisions in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.

Krause is a 1989 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and a 1993 graduate of Stanford University Law School. The firm said she had done significant pro bono work in the Philadelphia area for disabled children and others.
