Philly odds improve to host 2016 Democratic convention

Posted: July 10, 2014

THE ODDS of Philadelphia hosting the 2016 Democratic National Convention just improved a bit. And the thanks goes to Cleveland.

The Republican National Committee yesterday announced that it is recommending Cleveland for its 2016 convention. Cleveland is one of six cities that filed applications last month to host the Democratic convention that year.

The Democratic National Committee's "exclusivity clause" in that bidding process will cut Cleveland from the running if that city signs a deal with the Republicans.

The RNC announcement said the Cleveland recommendation "remains contingent on successful contract negotiations and a final vote" by RNC members next month in Chicago.

Philadelphia still faces competition from Birmingham, Ala.; Columbus, Ohio; Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Phoenix.

DNC officials are expected to tour Philadelphia in mid-August. A decision is expected by late 2014 or early 2015.
