Fred Groser, former publisher of Newsday Media Group in Melville, N.Y., has been hired as senior vice president of sales for the parent company of The Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News, and Philly.com., effective Sept. 2, owner H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest said Monday.

Groser, 59, of Yardley, was publisher of Newsday - which is the dominant source of news on Long Island, and in January had a circulation of 437,000 weekdays and 495,000 Sundays - from July 2010 through last year. He announced his retirement from Newsday, which is owned by Cablevision Systems Corp., last July.

Before joining Newsday, Groser was president and chief executive of ypOne Enterprises Inc., a Houston publisher of telephone directories.
