Upper Darby police were looking for an ex-boyfriend in connection with a woman's death.

About 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, police were called to a home in the 7000 block of Emerson Ave. to check on the welfare of an occupant. They found Masako Griffin, 38, dead on the floor of a second-floor bedroom. A piece of fabric covered her head, said Police Superintendent Michael J. Chitwood. He said she may have been dead at least two days.

"It looked like she was getting ready for bed," he said.

Announcement of an official cause of death was pending an autopsy, Chitwood said. "It looks like she may have been strangled," he said.

Police have been called to the house "numerous times" for domestic issues, he said. In mid-July, the woman's ex-boyfriend was arrested after he violated a protection-from-abuse order, Chitwood said.

The man, whom police would not identify, was last seen by neighbors near Griffin's home Thursday night. "She wanted to get him out of her life, he just wouldn't leave," said Chitwood.

Chitwood said the man had flattened Griffin's car tires, torn up her "church clothes," and been physically and verbally abusive.

"This guy is an animal," said Chitwood. The man has a significant police record, he said.
