Marcellus gas production up tenfold in five years

Posted: August 07, 2014

Marcellus Shale natural gas production from Pennsylvania and West Virginia exceeded 15 billion cubic feet per day in July, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and now accounts for about 40 percent of US shale-gas production.

Marcellus gas production has grown tenfold in five years and EIA on Tuesday projected the gas field is on track to supply the entire winter needs for Pennsylvania, West Virginia and five other states: New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.

The federal agency said that rising Marcellus production has outpaced growth in the region's pipeline capacity, which has resulted in multiple pipeline expansion projects focused on removing bottlenecks to deliver the gas to customers.
