McCoy had his finest season last year with 1,607 rushing yards, and it came after he played in only two preseason games. McCoy sat for the first and fourth games. He finished the preseason with 13 carries for 56 yards.
Prayers for Wilson
What probably was the final run of New York Giants running back David Wilson's career came in October against the Eagles, when he was stuffed by Eagles defensive lineman Cedric Thornton for a 3-yard loss.
Wilson underwent offseason neck surgery, but the Giants said Monday that he had a narrowing of the spinal column, called stenosis. The former first-round pick's career probably is over at age 23. Doctors recommended that he stop playing football.
"It's a bad situation," Thornton said. "I talked to my wife about it, and we just prayed for him, for the situation to get better. . . . He's 23. We're just praying that God gives him a sense of direction to go in the future . . . and hopefully he'll be as successful as he was in football."
Thornton said that a major injury could happen on any play.
"You definitely don't want to take it for granted," he said. "I tell the guys all day you don't know when it's your last time to step out on the field. Attack it like it's your last time."
Wide receivers Riley Cooper (foot) and Jeff Maehl (ankle/foot), running back Chris Polk (hamstring), cornerback Nolan Carroll (hamstring), linebacker Jake Knott (hamstring), and center Julian Vandervelde (back) missed practice. . . . Former Eagles coach Dick Vermeil attended Tuesday's workout. Vermeil and Eagles coach Chip Kelly had a conversation for a few minutes after the session.
