Sixers release preseason schedule

Posted: August 20, 2014

THE SIXERS, once again, will be returning to their roots, according to their just-released preseason schedule.

If part of the team's plan is to introduce rookies - and there might be as many as five first-year players on the opening-night roster - to the rigors of NBA travel, this schedule might do the trick.

Over the 18 days on the docket, the Sixers will visit six cities - along with two home games at the Wells Fargo Center - and will travel as far west as Minneapolis.

One of the stops will be Syracuse, where the franchise began as the Syracuse Nationals and won the 1955 NBA championship. For the second time in 3 years, the opposition will be former Syracuse great Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks. The game also will be a homecoming for the Sixers' Michael Carter-Williams, the reigning NBA rookie of the year, and second-round pick Jerami Grant, both former Orange players.

On Oct. 18, the team will head up to Allentown, the former home of the Eastern League's Allentown Jets. The Sixers will play Orlando in the brand new PPL Center, which will be the home of the Flyers' top minor league team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The last time the Sixers played in Allentown was on Oct. 2, 1974, in an exhibition game against the New York Nets of the ABA. Julius Erving, who was still a member of the Nets, sat the game out and the Sixers won, 109-89.

Preseason play begins Oct. 6 in Boston's TD Garden and concludes Oct. 23 in Auburn Hills, Mich., with a game against the Pistons.

Ticket information for the two games at the Wells Fargo Center, as well as the games in Syracuse and Allentown, will be announced at a future date.
