Motive unknown in shooting deaths of two Holmesburg women

Posted: August 26, 2014

Homicide detectives were searching Sunday for a motive in the killings of two women found shot to death in a house in Holmesburg Saturday.

The women, identified by neighbors and relatives as Dollie Evans, 67, and Ruby Thomas, 59, were shot in the head inside Evans' home on the 4700 block of Vista Street.

Thomas, who had been living with Evans for about two months, according to neighbors, was found with a gunshot wound to the head on a living room couch, police said. Evans, they said, was found on the floor of a second-floor bedroom, shot in the back of the head.

Police found the door of the house open when they responded to a report of gunfire about 5:55 p.m.

On Vista Street Sunday, residents recalled Evans as a friendly woman who would help others when she could.

"She always helped you out if you needed it," said a neighbor who gave her name only as Tina. She said she had talked to Evans just hours before the gunshots, and that Evans had given her son a dollar for the store.

But neighbors also said there had been past trouble involving the house, including when Evans' 29-year-old grandson was shot and wounded on the street after a July Fourth block party last month.

In 2007, Evans was arrested on drug-dealing charges. She pleaded guilty to one count of possessing drug paraphernalia and was placed on probation for a year.

Theresa Burger, who has raised three children on Vista Street with her husband, said the killings have left her shaken, worried that more will follow.

"For two older ladies to be shot like that," she said, "I'm afraid something is going to happen again."
