A year ago at this time, Matt Rhule was the guy nobody knew that much about. Now Rhule will face a coach who is in the same position when Temple opens its football season Thursday night at Vanderbilt.
Derek Mason was hired to replace James Franklin when Franklin left the Commodores to take the reins at Penn State. Mason, who previously served as Stanford's defensive coordinator, is one of 20 new Football Bowl Subdivision coaches this season and one of just five first-time coaches.
"He's probably going to go through what we all go through," Temple's second-year coach said Monday. "As a new coach, you know who you are going to put out there to start, but what you don't know is who is going to go out there and compete when the lights come on.
