Sixers obtain Thabeet from Thunder, expect to release him soon

IN A MOVE THAT will never really seem to be a move at all, the 76ers obtained center Hasheem Thabeet from the Oklahoma City Thunder yesterday but will waive him almost immediately. The move allows the Thunder to get a $1.25 million traded exception, while the Sixers will receive money considerations from OKC. Thabeet's $1.25 million salary will count against the Sixers' cap only until they waive him, then it no longer will as the money is not guaranteed.

Since no trade can be made for nothing, the Sixers gave up a second-round pick in next year's draft to OKC. The kick is that it is top 55 protected, meaning that unless the Sixers are one of the top five teams in the league, they'll hold on to the pick.

So basically, the Sixers did OKC a favor and got money for it. That's the extent of it.

In other news, rookie Joel Embiid tweeted out that he had signed his contract with the team, but sources close to the situation said he jumped the gun a little bit on that. The team isn't ready to announce Embiid's or any of the other rookie's signings. That should be coming in the not-too-distant future.
