Man dies after being shot, crashing car

An unidentified man was killed after being shot several times late Wednesday while driving a rental car that then crashed into an abandoned building in North Philadelphia, police said.

Shortly before midnight, police and medics were called to the 1600 block of West Seybert Street in response to a reported accident, Chief Inspector Scott Small said Thursday.

They found a man in his 20s or early 30s slumped in the driver's seat of a 2008 Hyundai and pulled him out from the passenger-side door because debris blocked the driver-side door, Small said.

"The entire front wall collapsed onto the car," Small said.

The driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had been shot in the face and left shoulder, and several times in the back, Small said.

Police found 18 spent shell casings about 100 feet away on Seybert and determined the man had been driving west on Seybert, then switched into reverse, Small said. The car struck several other abandoned buildings before coming to a stop.

Police reported no arrest in the case.
