NEW ORLEANS - Alex Smith once met Chip Kelly. Roll out the green carpet. Cue up the news conference. Stitch his surname on the back of a No. 11 Eagles jersey. Smith is coming to Philly. While that may be the preference for some fans - and could very well be the end result - there is no proof that Kelly has such desires. And even if the new Eagles coach coveted Smith, it's a long way from being remotely possible. And yet, that hasn't stopped many from speculating where the 49ers' backup quarterback may land this offseason, even as he's preparing to play the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII.

Jim Harbaugh hasn't revealed the 49ers' starting quarterback for Sunday, at least not publicly. But he has made up his mind, according to reports. Jim Trotter of SI.com reported that Colin Kaepernick will start in New Orleans, and ESPN.com later reported that the team was proceeding with plans to start Kaepernick. Harbaugh reportedly told Kaepernick and Alex Smith on Wednesday and that the decision was not health-related. Smith suffered a concussion Nov. 11 against the St. Louis Rams, and lingering symptoms kept him out of the Monday night game against the Chicago Bears.

The first pass that Alex Smith threw on Tuesday in St. Joseph, Mo., was to Tony Moeaki, who might have a hard time making the Kansas City Chiefs after an injury-plagued start to his career. Then came passes to Tyler Shoemaker, Rico Richardson, and Junior Hemingway. It was about as modest a start as you could get to Smith's first training camp with the Chiefs - a bunch of throws to wide receivers who may not be around in six weeks. Still, those passes on an unseasonably cool morning on the campus of Missouri Western represented the first step by Smith toward fulfilling expectations that have steadily grown ever since he was acquired from the 49ers this past offseason.

This is a post by Les Bowen on the Daily News' Eagles blog Eagletarian. THE TEAM most of us considered the main suitor for Nick Foles went in another direction Wednesday. Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs agreed in principle to a trade with the 49ers for quarterback Alex Smith, FoxSports.com reported. The 49ers will get Kansas City's second-round selection this April, 34th overall, and a conditional 2014 pick. The trade can't be official until free agency starts March 12. This development could mean the Eagles were not just posturing, and really do want to hold onto Foles, at least until Reid's successor, Chip Kelly, gets a look at last year's rookie QB on the practice field.

NEW ORLEANS - Jim Harbaugh called Alex Smith "a role model in team sports, especially for high school and youth sports," when the 49ers coach was asked Wednesday about how Smith has adjusted to being demoted. That surely was nice for Smith to hear, but what he really wants to be called is a starting quarterback again. Much of the media attention Smith is getting here at Super Bowl XLVII focuses on his viability as a QB for some other team, going forward. It's a tricky subject for Smith, 29, the first player selected in the 2005 draft.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Like his new coach and offensive coordinator, Alex Smith is enjoying an early resurgence with the Kansas City Chiefs. Smith and the 2-0 Chiefs will visit the Eagles on Thursday night. Last season, the quarterback suffered a concussion and never regained his starting job with the San Francisco 49ers. With a fresh start after a trade to Kansas City, Smith has thrived under coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Doug Pederson. Smith said that Reid and San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh have aided his development.

President Obama referred to Carson Wentz during a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday, and the rookie quarterback's No. 11 jersey is selling better than any other player's jersey in the NFL. The "Wentz Wagon," as the president referred to it, is sweeping through Philadelphia after Wentz's dazzling debut for the Eagles. Coach Doug Pederson's message to Wentz during the last few days has been to "be aware of just limiting the noise on the outside. " Wentz didn't need to hear it from his coach.

There was never a moment on Saturday when Chase Daniel wondered whether he would get his first chance to be an opening day starting quarterback in the NFL. At the same time he learned that Sam Bradford was traded, he was also informed that Carson Wentz would start. Daniel's role didn't change, but the order around him did. Wentz overtook him on the depth chart without even playing, and Daniel continued as the No. 2. "It's unfortunate for me personally, but that's not what it's about," Daniel said.

TOM BRADY agreed to a 3-year contract extension with the New England Patriots on Monday, a person familiar with the contract told the Associated Press. The extension is worth about $27 million and will free up nearly $15 million in salary-cap room. The 35-year-old, two-time league MVP was signed through 2014, and has said he wants to play at least 5 more years. Brady will make far less in those three seasons than the going rate for star quarterbacks.   Noteworthy *  The San Francisco 49ers are in talks to trade backup quarterback Alex Smith, ESPN reported, citing league sources. No NFL trades are permitted until March 12. * Star defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, from Utah, expected to be drafted high in the first round in April, has a heart condition, his agent said, and will undergo more extensive testing.

Chase Daniel is, quite literally, the quarterback in the middle of Sam Bradford and Carson Wentz, at least in the locker room. He's sandwiched in between the current starter and the presumptive future starter on the depth chart. His locker stall splits the two, with Bradford to his left and Wentz to his right. Daniel is the forgotten figure in the Eagles' quarterback drama, and yet, his role may be just as essential over the next two years. The veteran is to be Bradford's backup, Wentz's teacher, and quite possibly, the stopgap starter if one of several variables were to happen.

Sam Bradford didn't respond with a "negative" or even an "I would never play for Chip Kelly again," but it was clear from his headshake and a mumbled "Nah-uh" that his answer was "no" when he was asked if he considered following his former coach to the 49ers. It might have been an obvious response for someone who had just signed a two-year contract with the Eagles. But after Bradford spoke of his preference for being able to audible at the line of scrimmage - something Kelly's offense hardly ever allowed - it seemed clear that the quarterback wanted to return to a traditional NFL offense.

HEY, YOU. Yeah, you, the guy over there who seems willing to sacrifice his life, or at least dignity, to protect Jeffrey Lurie's money. Relax. It's going to be OK. Sam Bradford is not going to make $25 million a year. He isn't going to make $20 million a year. Heaven and earth will not collide the day he puts the pen to the paper. These are some facts you should know: 1 The cap hit of a Bradford contract for 2016 could very well be lower than it was last season, when he earned $13 million.

Doug Pederson said he would call plays on offense as the Eagles' new head coach. That might not necessarily be good news considering that he confirmed that he directed the Chiefs' sluggish final drive in the divisional playoff loss to the Patriots on Saturday. Many assumed that it was Andy Reid (who has had game management woes over his entire coaching career) calling the plays. But Pederson, the former Chiefs offensive coordinator, said that he started calling plays in the second half of games dating back to Week 7. "Coach Reid and I had a great understanding and a great feel for the game," Pederson said Tuesday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Doug Pederson had never called a play as an NFL offensive coordinator until this season. His boss, Andy Reid, handled those chores. The Chiefs coach added more to Pederson's plate in 2015, giving him situational play-calling responsibilities such as the two-minute drill. When Pederson's quarterbacks were asked about his readiness to become a full-time play-caller - or even a head coach, as he will be with the Eagles - they didn't focus as much on the job he has done in that role as they did on his actual experience as a quarterback.

The Eagles will hire Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson as their next head coach, league sources confirmed Thursday. Because the Chiefs are still in the playoffs, the Eagles must wait for their season to conclude before the move will be official. The Chiefs will play the New England Patriots on Saturday. "We have concluded our search for a new head coach," an Eagles spokesman said. "No further interviews are scheduled. " The selection of Pederson is a nod by owner Jeffrey Lurie to the success and environment that the team had under Andy Reid.

THE NUMBER of games are dwindling, so playing in daily fantasy leagues is getting harder. Good luck, in particular, figuring out who to start at running back. Quarterbacks Hate it when a team scores 30 points and the quarterback barely moves the fantasy needle. That's what happened with Alex Smith last week. After averaging three TDs for his first three career playoff games, he threw just one in the rout over Houston. In his only game against Bill Belichick's defense, Smith threw for 248 yards and three scores when the Chiefs routed New England early in 2014.
