Ron Wilson's unpredictable coaching style with the Washington Capitals ran the gamut from fun-loving to hostile. He once took the team bowling to try to cure a slump, but he'd also get upset over the smallest of matters. After five years, the act was getting old. The Capitals, who haven't won a playoff series since reaching the Stanley Cup finals in 1998, fired Wilson yesterday. "At some point, players sort of tune things out," general manager George McPhee said. "And that's why the change was made . . . He's a very good coach.

Here's a switch: The Toronto Maple Leafs actually had good things to say about NHL officials. After spending most of the playoffs complaining about calls that went against them, the Maple Leafs got a critical one in their favor, allowing them to hang on for a 2-1 victory over the host Ottawa Senators last night. A video review with 25.4 seconds remaining disallowed what initially had been ruled a Senators goal, and the Leafs managed to tie their Eastern Conference semifinal series, 2-2. "That's the only call they could've made," Toronto's Shayne Corson said.

The Toronto Maple Leafs tried to turn their attention to a crucial four-game road trip, one day after a pregame ceremony took a tragic turn. Art Jackson, the nephew of former Maple Leafs player Harvey "Busher" Jackson, collapsed just as Jackson was being introduced before Toronto's 3-3 tie with Buffalo on Saturday night during a ceremony that honored the top 25 players in team history. While Frank Mahovlich, Darryl Sittler, Lanny McDonald and several other Toronto greats stood at center ice under the spotlights - the main arena lights were down for the festivities - Maple Leafs physician Dr. Michael Clarfield performed CPR on Jackson, but was unable to revive him. Jackson was 78. "We are very saddened by the passing of Art Jackson," team president Ken Dryden said in a postgame release.
