Amazing, but not surprising The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , the first release of the summer movie season and the biggest film of the year for Sony Corp., led the U.S. box office in its opening weekend. Starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone , it netted $92 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters. International sales to date total $277 million. Never Let Me Go is sci-fi for the Belle & Sebastian set. A beautifully mopey adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's much-praised novel, with Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, and Andrew Garfield as young Brits in dark mood and rumpled mode, the film offers a meditation on identity, repressed longing, existential dread, and organ farming - in a seemingly idyllic England of the late 1970s and then into the 1980s. Seemingly , of course, is the operative word. As children living at the cloistered Hailsham School (there are juvenile doppelgängers in the roles later assumed by the three stars)

LOS ANGELES - Sony Pictures has found its new Peter Parker: British heartthrob Andrew Garfield. The studio announced this week that it had cast the 26-year-old star of the upcoming "Never Let Me Go" and "The Social Network" in one of the most closely scrutinized casting decisions in recent Hollywood history. Garfield also starred in "Lions for Lambs," "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" and the acclaimed British miniseries "Red Riding. " The fourth film in the series is planned to be a "Spider-Man" origin story that Sony earlier in the year said would focus on "a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing superhuman crises.

"Rome is burning, son!" barks poli-sci professor Stephen Malley (Robert Redford), trying to shake the smug self-interest out of his bright but blase student (Andrew Garfield), as the world beyond their cloistered California campus goes seriously kablooey. A passionate plea for public engagement in government and politics, a condemnation of failed U.S. military policies in the Middle East, and a star-studded affair to say the least, Lions for Lambs is also stagy, and worse, dull.

In some ways, the central figure of Boy A, a compassionate portrait of a first-time offender given a second chance, is a newborn. His caseworker and surrogate father, Terry (Peter Mullan), rechristens the slender, anxious youth (Andrew Garfield) Jack. Jack Burridge. At first, the boy repeats his name like an incantation. Then, he tosses it offhandedly, in the manner of James Bond. Then, this man-child, incarcerated during his teenage years for his part in a crime that the film discloses v-e-r-y incrementally, toddles into the promised land of Manchester, England, where a room (stark as a whiteboard, to underscore his blank-slate quality)

"AMAZING Spider-Man 2" star Andrew Garfield recently stirred some controversy when he said he brought up the possibility that Miles Morales - the half-black/half-Latino teen who replaced Peter Parker as Spidey in Marvel's Ultimate comic-book line - could replace him as the movie Spider-Man once Garfield spins his last web. While many dismissed the idea, Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso is not among them. "Yeah, I could easily see it happening," Alonso told Tattle Comics Guy Jerome Maida . "I'm excited by the prospect of seeing the world's most recognizable superhero peel back the mask and show a new face and how inclusive that would be and what a statement that would make - and I don't think I'm alone!"

Reboots on the ground! If the 2014 summer movie season - officially underway with Friday's opening of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - will be remembered for anything, it could be its head-spinning deluge of giant-screen sequels, prequels, retreads, and franchise revivifications. Take the aforementioned Marvel-branded action romp starring the arachnoidal crime-stopper: a sequel to a reboot of an original franchise based on a comic book series. Shall we go on? If some enterprising soul out there has Final Cut Pro and time to burn, there's a great mashup to be culled from the trailers of S pider-Man, Godzilla, Transformers , and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

We're happy to report that The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield , 29, hasn't been too badly jaded by the Hollywood experience.
