Before R.J. Cutler started on The September Issue - his brilliant behind-the-scenes look at Vogue and its mighty monarch of an editor, Anna Wintour - the documentary filmmaker would have been hard-pressed to tell you much of anything about the world of couture. "I could not have named three of the world's most important designers," he says. "I certainly couldn't have told you that Karl Lagerfeld designed for Chanel. . .. "I could list for hours the things I didn't know then that I do know now. " But one thing Cutler did know, of course, was who Wintour was. "Who hasn't heard of her?

In a tiered strapless gown by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, Amal Clooney was the most elegantly dressed celebrity Monday evening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala. On the other hand, Vogue editor Anna Wintour - the grand dame of the annual, star-studded fund-raiser - caused the most pain. (Had there ever been any doubt, we are now crystal clear that there is such a thing as too much floral.) But know this: Wintour may have had a surprisingly unfortunate sartorial misstep, but she continues to be the event's winner.

The New York Post reports that while J.Lo is blaming Medina for costing her the cover of Vogue, it was the magazine's tough editor, Anna Wintour, who decided that Ben Affleck's main squeeze looked too low-class. Lopez and Medina parted ways last month after she accused him of misappropriating funds, among other alleged wrongs, including messing up the Vogue opportunity.

Meryl Streep is the queen and she rules The Devil Wears Prada with frosty command, a one-woman corrective to global warming. In this droll comedy Streep is Miranda Priestly (rhymes with beastly), absolute dictator of Runway magazine, which is to fashion as the Bible is to Western religion. Streep plays her as Cruella DeVil, her hair a halo of platinum and her voice softer than cashmere, swathed in the pelts of varied endangered species - including those of her personal assistants.
