For starters, Anthony Walters has been pretty darn good. A late-season replacement as a starting quarterback for Cardinal O'Hara, Walters ran a renovated option attack last December to lead the Lions to a victory over vaunted St. Joseph's Prep in the Catholic League Red Division championship game. Now comes another meeting with the rival Hawks, who are No. 1 in The Inquirer top 10 and tomorrow offer No. 4 O'Hara the chance to challenge Prep's 40-game winning streak in Catholic Red regular-season games.

When Delaware cornerback Anthony Walters suits up for his final college football game on Friday, he will be in familiar territory. Throughout his high school and college career, Walters, a graduate of Cardinal O'Hara, has made a habit of ending the year in a championship setting. On Friday, Walters and his Delaware team will meet Eastern Washington in the Football Championship Subdivision title game between 12-2 teams. Game time is 7 p.m. from Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. "For a while, I've been getting to championship games, and being a competitor you don't want to watch it on TV," Walters said in a phone interview before the team departed on Tuesday for Texas.

NEWARK, Del. - Anthony Walters can only shake his head in gratitude. The Delaware free safety has experienced the sort of unconditional love and guidance over the years that he'll never forget. Walters believes that support - more so than his tireless work ethic - has helped him become arguably the most versatile Blue Hen. He had his older brother, Will Walters, who never let him settle for giving anything less than 100 percent. He had his mother, Lisa Bloxom, who always kept a watchful eye on him and demanded that he'd become well-spoken and college educated.

An intriguing Red Division road game for Cardinal O'Hara, and it's not St. Joseph's Prep? Yes, that's La Salle on the top side of the division these days, unbeaten in five tries (including two league wins) and primed for this game, in which Explorers coach Joe Colistra is aiming to break John "Tex" Flannery's school record for career coaching victories. A win over O'Hara would be No. 150 for Colistra. A win over O'Hara might not be a such a shock to O'Hara coach Dan Algeo.

For those expecting offensive fireworks between two high-powered Catholic League offenses last night, all those wishes went wet. But even if the conditions had been perfect at Springfield-Montco's formerly dusty field, Cardinal O'Hara's defense would have left previously unbeaten La Salle high and dry. The Lions dominated time of possession and every other facet of a game that showcased some good punting, primarily because the Lions' defense...

Anthony Walters had a dream recently, and he was hoping it would not come true. "I had a dream that I didn't make it to the Big 33 game," said Walters, Cardinal O'Hara High's standout quarterback and defensive back. "When I woke up, I realized how upset I was. I thought if I didn't make it, I was going to be angry. " But Walters made the cut when coaches from around the state met at Penn State this weekend to select the team that will face Ohio in the 49th Big 33 Classic, which will be played June 17 at HersheyPark Stadium.

Anthony Walters has been a key player on winning Delaware football teams. He's helped the Blue Hens win playoff games, but now he is focused on one goal: ringing in the new year. "I want a ring," Walters said before Delaware (12-2) left for Frisco, Texas, to play Eastern Washington (12-2) in tonight's NCAA Football Championship Subdivision title game (ESPN2, 7 o'clock). "I've made a couple teams," the senior defensive back from Cardinal O'Hara High said, referring to all-conference and All-America squads.

Dan Algeo had the halftime to make lifetime decisions. Cardinal O'Hara trailed St. Joseph's Prep, 13-2, and looked destined to lose its eighth straight game to the Hawks, thus allowing them their fourth consecutive Catholic League Red Division title. At the break, the only prime-time play Algeo had seen out of his Lions was a fumble-recovery try perfect for a blooper highlight reel. Lions quarterback Anthony Walters had a dismal first half. He was 2-of-11 passing for 22 yards with an interception, and he rushed for just 8 yards on four carries with a fumble.

It's Commencement Day for high school football, and two of the best teams in the Catholic League are ready to go to work. So why did they head for the Jersey Shore? "We just figured players would like it since many of their families usually go down the Shore [on Labor Day weekend]," said Dan Algeo, the Cardinal O'Hara coach, recalling a season-opening game plan he helped hatch last year with Joe Powel, Algeo's friend and the coach at Archbishop Wood. "Neither O'Hara nor Wood would have gotten much of a crowd if we played the game at home, so this way, it gets everybody together and we should get a pretty good crowd to watch it," Algeo said.

In a sickening span of 2 minutes, 34 seconds last night, Cardinal O'Hara freshman quarterback Tom Savage saw why his teammates always talk about St. Joseph's Prep in respectful, if pained, tones. The Prep, top-ranked in The Inquirer's Southeastern Pennsylvania top 10, perhaps feeling a bit fortunate to be tied instead of trailing, stunned the Lions with three strikes of unlikely lightning late in the third quarter, paving the way to a 31-7 victory and cementing the No. 1 seed in the Catholic League Red playoffs.
