As dozens of North Philadelphia neighbors were about to play "Winner Takes All" at a weekend baby shower, a violent confrontation with police ensued. Before the raffle winner could be announced, three men were arrested. At least six others alleged they were beaten with a baton or subdued with pepper spray while dozens of officers converged on the party Saturday night in the 2400 block of West Master Street. Police came to assist a distressed officer who said he was facing the angry crowd at the baby shower and a nearby church gathering that had attracted more than 150 people of all ages, including babies and the elderly.

Draped in violet silk chiffon, mom-to-be Natalie Portman looked sensational at the Academy Awards, baby bump and all. But for Tamar Klaiman, like most other women, the home stretch of pregnancy was anything but glamorous. With an aching back and swollen feet, the last thing Klaiman wanted in the weeks before her due date was a baby shower. "I had no desire to be in a room full of people paying all their attention to me and to open presents in front of everyone," said the first-time mother, whose son, Abraham, was born in April.

WHEN YOU think of "entertainer," who comes to mind? A lot of late people - the late Frank Sinatra, the late Sammy Davis Jr., the late James Brown, the late Liza Minelli . . . oh, wait, it's only her career that's dead. Maybe Celine Dion, in some alternate universe. Don't say Wayne Newton. Please. Is there such a lack of entertainers these days that Entertainment Weekly felt compelled to name J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter mega-popular series, as its Entertainer of the Year?

William Hurt's first wife, actress Mary Beth Hurt, testified yesterday that she urged her then-husband to marry his pregnant lover in 1982, but he declared he was "finished with marriage. " The actress testified for Hurt at the close of the palimony suit brought against the Oscar-winning actor by former ballerina Sandra Jennings, his ex- lover and mother of his son Alexander, 6. Mary Beth Hurt, wearing a slouchy gray sweatshirt and skirt and a cropped blonde hairstyle, said she and Hurt had been separated several years when he told her he wanted a divorce during a September 1982 meeting.

Moist air left by Hurricane Fran and the hottest weather since May erupted into thunderstorms yesterday that killed two people in Montgomery County, sent others fleeing flooded homes in a state of emergency and caused massive damage. In Abington Township, where storms dumped at least 5 inches of rain in two hours, two people were found dead around 9:40 p.m. in a flooded basement in the Roslyn section. One died of a heart attack, authorities said. The other drowned. The fierce storms pummelled parts of Northeast Philadelphia with more than 2 inches of rain and drenched the Northern suburbs with more than twice that.

The retired 69-year-old Northeast Philadelphia physician is about 5 feet tall and hardly looked dangerous sitting in court. But yesterday, an assistant district attorney said at a preliminary hearing that George F. Roedell, charged with murdering his daughter last month, "poses a serious threat to members of his family. " Roedell's wife, Helen, told Municipal Judge Ronald B. Merriweather that after her husband shot their daughter, Karen, 32, in their home on Willits Road near Academy on March 4, he turned a gun on her and said, "You're next.

HOW UTTERLY appropriate that Ira Einhorn feels irrelevant. Columnist Ronnie Polaneczky strikes right at the heart of his character with her words "narcissistic gasbag. " I was there on Earth Day 1970 when Ira took over the microphone. He was booed off in short order. I also attended his trial testimony. For two days, the courtroom sat appalled as Ira dropped names, spun yarns and tossed around literary references, more like a man applying for membership at an exclusive club than one on trial for the rest of his life.

DMX WAS supposed to appear in a White Plains, N.Y., court Wednesday to face a slew of bad-driving charges, but when he failed to show, the judge who had already granted him two postponements had had enough. Judge Barbara Leak issued an arrest warrant for the rapper (aka Earl Simmons). "We have granted him a number of courtesies," the judge said. "It ends now. " DMX's lawyer, Stacey Murray, promised that he would come to court yesterday. He did. And he went to jail - held on $25,000 bail.

YESTERDAY, when it had become clear that Arnold Schwarzenegger had diddled a member of his household staff, there was some question as to what the then-unnamed woman did. Personal assistant? Nanny? Cook? Nope, Mildred Patty Baena was a maid. As if there was any doubt. The woman who mussed up Maria Shriver 's sheets, also washed them. Here are the other updates to one of the creepiest tales since the Brothers Grimm . The "event," as Arnold referred to it in his statement (not even giving it the dignity of a "special event")

DID THEY or didn't they? The Star said Saturday that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had been married in New Orleans. People, however, said they're in Texas where Brad is filming Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life. " The pair's publicist agreed with People, saying that the wedding story was wrong. Yesterday, the Star took a step back from the tale. But in the fascinating whisper-down-the-lane way that even false stories gain momentum, "Extra" spoke with Rev. Tony Talavera, of the French Quarter Wedding Chapel, so that he could insist that he had not married the couple.
