A family friend of former Philadelphia Police Officer Frank Tepper told a jury Thursday that she saw blood on Tepper's face shortly before he shot neighbor William Panas Jr. Rebecca Malinowski, 21, was called as a witness by defense attorney Fortunato "Fred" Perri Jr. as he began his case in Tepper's murder trial in Common Pleas Court. Tepper, 45, is charged in the Nov. 21, 2009, shooting of Panas after a melee that erupted outside Tepper's Port Richmond rowhouse. Malinowski's testimony was important because it corroborated Perri's claim that, before Tepper fired his weapon, he was punched in the face trying to break up a fight that erupted between neighborhood men and guests at a baby shower for his daughter.

ON NOV. 21, 2009, William Panas Jr. was just being a "wiseass" when he dared off-duty Philadelphia cop Frank Tepper to shoot him during a Port Richmond street fight, a city prosecutor told a jury yesterday. "You're not going to shoot anybody," Panas, 21, said upon seeing Tepper point a Smith & Wesson 9mm semiautomatic handgun at him, Assistant District Attorney Michael Barry told the jury, on the first day of Tepper's murder trial. "Rather than just letting the kid be a wiseass, he pulled the trigger and shot him," Barry said during his opening argument.

Question: My brother and his wife are expecting a little boy this spring. We're all very excited, and I've offered to host the baby shower. The problem is that the parents-to-be are putting all kinds of conditions on the shower. They want it to be coed, because my sister-in-law doesn't want to have all the attention on her. They also don't want to open gifts at the shower. I really don't like these ideas, and wish I hadn't offered to host. I sincerely doubt men want to go to a baby shower.

Singer Andy Williams told the crowd at his Christmas show Saturday night that he has bladder cancer. "But that is no longer a death sentence. People with cancer are getting through this thing. They're kicking it, and they're winning more and more every year. And I'm going to be one of them. " The 83-year-old Williams appeared early in the show at the Moon River Theatre and vowed to return next year to celebrate his 75th year in show business. Williams' appearance Saturday brought a standing ovation from a nearly full house.

SALEM, N.J. - A South Jersey high school teacher who allegedly slapped a female student's face was acquitted Tuesday of a simple-assault charge she filed. Salem City Municipal Judge Jason Witcher ruled that there wasn't enough evidence to indicate Steve Merritt intended to injure the student, 18. Witnesses said Merritt - a longtime English teacher at Salem High School - tapped the student in what appeared to be a joking manner. Witcher said the student apparently misinterpreted Merritt's actions.

Q: How do friends and family celebrate the birth of a second child? I've heard a shower should be thrown only in honor of the first baby's birth. A: Strict etiquette holds that friends and family shower the mother-to-be only the first time around, because the gifts given generally provide the parents with the items they'll need for children who may follow. Also, people shouldn't feel pressured to buy gifts for each new member of the family. But as with most questions of etiquette, good reasons arise for breaking the rules.

YESTERDAY, when it had become clear that Arnold Schwarzenegger had diddled a member of his household staff, there was some question as to what the then-unnamed woman did. Personal assistant? Nanny? Cook? Nope, Mildred Patty Baena was a maid. As if there was any doubt. The woman who mussed up Maria Shriver 's sheets, also washed them. Here are the other updates to one of the creepiest tales since the Brothers Grimm . The "event," as Arnold referred to it in his statement (not even giving it the dignity of a "special event")

Draped in violet silk chiffon, mom-to-be Natalie Portman looked sensational at the Academy Awards, baby bump and all. But for Tamar Klaiman, like most other women, the home stretch of pregnancy was anything but glamorous. With an aching back and swollen feet, the last thing Klaiman wanted in the weeks before her due date was a baby shower. "I had no desire to be in a room full of people paying all their attention to me and to open presents in front of everyone," said the first-time mother, whose son, Abraham, was born in April.
