Police are offering a $6,500 reward to catch the creep who sexually assaulted a Bella Vista barista Thursday morning. Investigators say Christopher Reeve, 32, entered the Bean Exchange Coffee House at 7th and Bainbridge streets shortly after the 29-year-old barista, who was working alone, opened for the day at 6 a.m. He asked her for money, she gave him a small amount, and he left, said Capt. John Darby, head of the Special Victims Unit. But he returned within minutes, announced a robbery, stole $173 from the cash register and then ordered her to the bathroom.

The witnesses described how the crime had shattered their shared belief in urban neighborliness and safety in South Philadelphia's Bella Vista section. On Friday, the man who admitted the crime that fractured Bella Vista was sentenced to 311/2 to 63 years in prison for the rape last March of a barista at a popular local coffee shop. Christopher Reeves, 33, a man whose lawyer said began a life of homelessness and chronic drug use at age 12, said nothing before he was sentenced by Common Pleas Court Judge William J. Mazzola.

By Matt Katz I've been sitting in this coffee shop for 20 minutes and have yet to hear a word spoken. Two customers are enveloped in huge headphones; three others are stoically sunbathing in the glow of their laptops. I feel the barista counting down the minutes until quitting time. I hate this place. And I miss Beauty Shop Café. My local coffee shop - the one on the corner of my block in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood, the one where I really did know everyone's name, the one with the old-school hair dryer in the corner paying homage to its beauty shop past - was sold last month.

How much caffeine can Rittenhouse Square handle? Already home of the flagship La Colombe on 19th Street north of the square, this spring the enclave will get the first Philadelphia branch of New York's Joe Coffee Bar , at 1845 Walnut St., and a branch of roaster/creperie Cafe L'Aube , at the 222 Rittenhouse condo building. This week saw the premiere of Metropolitan Cafe (264 S. 19th St.) next door to the Metropolitan Bakery just south of the square, at 19th and Manning Streets.

When Shake Shack took over the space Dom's Shoe Repair Service had occupied since 1994, Dom's owner Leandro Montalto found a storefront down the street. The Roxborough native made very few modifications to the former dry cleaner's space. He ripped up wall-to-wall carpeting in favor of laminate hardwood flooring, and changed the color of the faux-wood wainscoting from blue to white. Why? "It's a little more appealing," Montalto says, shrugging. It's fair to say he put less thought into designing interactions with his customers than Shake Shack did. There, the order-taker asks your name before handing you a buzzer so when you go to pick up your food, the server can thank you personally.
