Officials at Penn State and Navy announced Wednesday that the two teams will meet on Sept. 15, 2012, at Beaver Stadium, the first time the Nittany Lions and Midshipmen have played each other since 1974. With the announcement of the game, Penn State athletic director Tim Curley said the Lions' contest against Temple, originally scheduled for that date, will move to Sept. 22, also at Beaver Stadium. The most frightening moment of Michael Robinson's career occurred last season at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis., when the Badgers' fierce defensive end, Erasmus James, put him out for three weeks with a crushing hit on a sack. Robinson eventually recovered from the concussion he suffered, but Penn State didn't. The Nittany Lions' 16-3 loss that day sent them into free fall as they went on to lose their next five games during a dreary 4-7 season. And even though Penn State coach Joe Paterno warns his players never to speak publicly of payback, there's little doubt Robinson would enjoy a bit of vengeance.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - A snow-covered field in Centre County, especially one so near to fetid cow barns and massive Beaver Stadium, seems an odd place to honor the longtime superintendent of a golf course 150 miles away. But here, amid small fir trees on a remote corner of Penn State's vast campus, stands a small fieldstone memorial to the namesake of the surrounding Joseph E. Valentine Turfgrass Research Center. That rock, rising above the mid-January whiteness like an Alpine peak, was dug from the ground at Merion Golf Club's historic 11th hole.

On freshman orientation day at Penn State, Great Valley's Chris Geiss could easily skip the suggested tour around campus. His father, Robert, was a member of the school's band, and his mother, Pat, played lacrosse for the Nittany Lions. They passed their love of all that is State College along to their son. "Ever since I was born, I've gone to at least one game each season," Chris Geiss said. "It's almost like it's my second home. " In realizing one of his childhood dreams, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior will soon be spending ample time at Beaver Stadium.

RE Kerith Gabriel's reference in the sports section to the assault of a fan at Beaver Stadium: I'm appalled. A Penn State fan wore Michigan colors and received a beating. Mr. Gabriel referred to the fan as stupid to don the garb, but last I checked, you should be able to root for anyone you choose without fear of harm. This at an institution of higher learning. The future leaders of America. Tragic. A so-called professional journalist places blame where freedom of choice should prevail.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - It was Thursday night, a few minutes before 9, and Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin stood on the pavement outside Beaver Stadium, flanked by teammates Matt Stankiewitch and Eric Shrive. The trio looked on as a group of their peers - about 240 - huddled in a circle and began to jump up and down. "We love you, we love you," the group chanted as the individuals banged on trash cans, flailed their arms in the air, and twirled in circles. "And that is why we follow.
