It was the year of the passing game, what with Pennsauken's Manny Cortez throwing for a South Jersey-record 43 touchdowns and Pennsville's Dylan Cummings becoming the first sophomore in state history to throw for more than 3,000 yards. There were receivers such as Pennsauken's Amar Williams and Woodrow Wilson's T.J. Chambliss putting up huge numbers. But the running backs refused to be overshadowed. The Inquirer's All-South Jersey first team on offense features four running backs, with record-setting junior Corey Clement filling the all-purpose slot because of his excellence on defense and in the kicking game as well as a rusher.

In case you were wondering, the holiday season began on TV more than two weeks ago when that adorable little elf Justin Bieber sang "Fa La La," a song from his Christmas album, on Dancing With the Stars . That was the first flake. Here comes the blizzard. If you're not running amok through Best Buy on Black Friday, you can stay home and watch Jingle All the Way or The Elf on a Shelf . The week after that, the Rock Center tree gets lit in prime time (Please be my Santa, Al Roker)

If West Deptford holds Haddonfield running back Chris Dengler to half his per-carry average in Friday's Colonial Conference showdown, the Eagles will still be in big trouble. In a sport in which 5 yards per carry is good and 10 is off the charts, Dengler is picking up 22 yards per carry. He has rushed for 309 yards on just 14 carries as Haddonfield has broken to a 2-0 start. "Just following my blocks," Dengler said. Haddonfield coach Frank DeLano said Dengler's fast start is the result of more than good blocking.

This is the sort of return the Washington Nationals are expecting for their huge investment in Jayson Werth: The moxie to pull off a steal of third in the 10th inning at a time when his every mistake has been generating boos. Moments after he stunned the ballpark by swiping the bag, Werth was crossing home plate with arms raised, his teammates headed his way to celebrate. Werth had scored on a wild pitch, and the fans who had been so hard on him the last few days were cheering his daring move in a 5-4, Fourth of July matinee win over the visiting Chicago Cubs.

LANDISVILLE, Pa. - Every basketball player dreams of posting big numbers in the crunch time that comes with the latter part of a season. What he doesn't want is to head home having absorbed a punch to the gut. Say hello to Tracy Peal, who used to be a 6-6, 250-pound senior center for Archbishop Carroll High. The past tense is now necessary because his career has come to an end. Peal hustled and bumped his way to 21 points and 12 rebounds last night in a PIAA Class AAA first-round game in Hempfield High's filled-to-the-brim gym. One problem: The result was a 56-55 loss to Eastern York, of nearby Wrightsville.
