Miami Dolphins wide receiver O.J. McDuffie will undergo surgery on the big toe of his left foot early this week, the second time the toe will have been operated on since February. McDuffie, 30, had surgery Feb. 16 to correct the turf-toe injury that plagued him last season. "O.J.'s toe hasn't been responding like we all thought it would," Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt said in a statement. "Everyone is convinced this will get him back to 100 percent and playing as fast as possible.

An MRI exam on Shaquille O'Neal's right foot yesterday confirmed arthritis in his big toe, an ailment that prompted the Los Angeles Lakers to place him on the injured list a day earlier. In addition, a CT scan on O'Neal's sore left foot was negative, the Lakers said. O'Neal, averaging 26.0 points and 11.5 rebounds, was placed on the injured list before the Lakers rallied to beat the 76ers, 88-82, on Tuesday night in a rematch of June's NBA Finals. O'Neal must sit out at least four more games.

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Phillies righthander Ryan Madson (right big toe) needed just nine pitches for his perfect rehab inning for Class A Clearwater against Dunedin last night. With threatening skies and rain approaching, Madson warmed up quickly, then went out and got a groundout and two strikeouts in the sixth inning of Clearwater's 2-1 loss. "It felt good today," Madson said of his quick session. "Maybe it was what I needed to get back into the swing of things. Working quick. " Madson then threw 10-plus pitches in the bullpen.

PENN STATE All-America defensive tackle Devon Still will attend the NFL Scouting Combine next week in Indianapolis and take part in drills, agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed. Still was a late withdrawal from the Senior Bowl with a sprained big toe. Still, from Wilmington, is projected to go in the top 15 picks, so missing the Senior Bowl should not hurt his draft stock. MIAMI - This Phillies season was cursed long before Ryan Howard dropped a lead pole on his right big toe while standing in the on-deck circle Thursday, but the $125 million slugger accidentally created the latest fitting image. A broken toe ended his season five games early. Manager Charlie Manuel made the announcement in the visitors' dugout at Marlins Park and could not help but laugh. Gallows humor is all these Phillies have. "Phew," Manuel said. "Kind of different. " The most trying season of Howard's career is over.

MILWAUKEE - There are no guarantees in the Phillies outfield, a fact not lost on Nate Schierholtz, and that is why he played catch Friday at Miller Park with a metal plate inserted into his right sneaker. Schierholtz begged for a chance at everyday playing time in San Francisco and thought he had received at least two months of it with a trade to Philadelphia. Then he fouled two balls off his right big toe and landed on the disabled list. He is determined to not make it the last impression for 2012.
