Emanuel Garcia's RBI single in the top of the ninth sent the Binghamton Mets past the Trenton Thunder, 5-3, last night in an Eastern League opener for both teams. Josh Tole then singled in an insurance run for the Mets. Marcos Vechionacci, Chris Malec, and Kevin Smith singled in runs for Trenton in the third, when the Thunder did all of its scoring. Starter Eric Hacker gave up just one run in 5 1/3 innings for Trenton but did not get a decision.

The Thunder wasted three homers and a 6-0 lead. Richmond 7, Scranton 6 RICHMOND, Va. - Bill McCarthy singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Braves beat the Red Barons in the International League. McCarthy had homered earlier in the game.

Binghamton won the second game, 9-3. The Mets' Tim Sandy was 3 for 4, scored two runs, and had four RBIs, including two on a home run. Despite his ERA's rising from 9.00 to 9.11 in his last start, David Buchanan will remain in the Phillies rotation and make his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Washington Nationals, interim manager Pete Mackanin said Saturday. No major-league pitcher - starter or reliever - who has logged at least 50 innings has a worse ERA than Buchanan, who has averaged fewer than five innings in 11 starts this season. His 2.08 walks plus hits per inning pitched is also a major-league worst.

READING - Jesse Biddle didn't get the win, but he did something even more encouraging. The lefthander gave one of his most commanding performances of the year in Reading's 7-6 win Tuesday. Statistically, it was his third-most accurate start this season. For three innings, Biddle had everything figured out. The Inquirer's No. 2-ranked Phillies prospect allowed a run in the second and third innings against the Binghamton Mets. He also took a line drive off his hip. Then the Germantown Friends product settled into a rhythm in the fourth.

READING - Reading's Mike Cisco hurled a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters, as the Phillies blanked the Binghamton Mets, 5-0, Thursday in an Eastern League contest. Cisco (4-9) allowed just one walk. Both baserunners came in the first inning, and Cisco retired the final 25 batters. Reading's last one-hit shutout was posted by Gary Knotts on Aug. 16, 2007. HARRISBURG - Matthew Cusick's RBI double in the second inning produced the only run the Thunder could manage in the Eastern League loss to the Senators.
