Dayne Crist threw for two first-quarter touchdowns and ran for another on Saturday night as Notre Dame built a 21-point lead and coasted to a 31-13 victory over host Boston College. The Fighting Irish (2-3) had lost three straight games - all to teams currently in the Associated Press Top 25. But they got little resistance from Boston College (2-2), which promoted freshman Chase Rettig to starting quarterback during the week only to lose him to an ankle injury early in the second quarter.

Roger Powell Jr. scored 21 points and Deron Williams added 18, leading top-ranked Illinois to an 89-66 victory over Minnesota yesterday in Champaign, Ill. The Illini (21-0, 7-0 Big Ten) opened the game with a 10-1 run and stretched their conference winning streak to 17 games, tying a school record set from 1914-16. Minnesota (14-6, 4-3) had trouble with the Illini defense from the start, committing turnovers on its first two possessions. The Golden Gophers were led by Vincent Grier, who scored 17 points.

NEWPORT, R.I. - Montel Harris got Temple fans excited last month when he arrived on campus. But that reaction will pale in comparison to the one Harris will receive Saturday, when he lines up at running back on the first day of Temple's training camp. "I can't wait to see him practice," Owls coach Steve Addazio said Tuesday of the Boston College transfer. "That hasn't happened. That's coming here shortly. " On paper, Harris is better than former Temple running back Bernard Pierce, the third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in April.

Villanova announced its 2013 football schedule on Monday, and the Wildcats will open the season on Aug. 30, at Boston College. It will be the first game against the Eagles since the 1980 season. Matt Lytle hit Jake Hoffart on a 40-yard touchdown pass play and Pitt didn't yield a touchdown until 1:10 remained last night to upset Boston College, 20-13. Dwayne Schulters ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers (3-5, 2-4 Big East) won only their second Big East Conference game in two seasons. BC is now 4-5, 1-4. New Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson, who will decide the fate of coach Johnny Majors, watched on TV.

Holy Spirit running back William Green, one of the most heavily recruited football players in South Jersey, has made an oral commitment to attend Boston College, Holy Spirit athletic director Jay Connell said. Connell said that Green committed to Boston College during a visit to the Chestnut Hill, Mass., school two weekends ago. Boston College coaches "told me that he had made an oral commitment," Connell said yesterday, "and I talked to him and he said that he had. " Green is the fourth area football player to orally commit to a Division I school.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. - Boston College standout Montel Harris is transferring to Temple, which would appear to create a tailback controversy for the Owls. But the opposite is true, according to the father of the senior who is listed as the starter. "If [Harris] is healthy, he can't help but add to the team being very successful this season," Warren Brown, whose son Matt is currently the starting tailback, said Sunday. "And from a personal point of view, it means that Matt doesn't have to be the primary back.

Temple freshman Rick Brunson has set the wheels in motion for a transfer to Boston College. Eagles coach Jim O'Brien confirmed last night that he had been contacted by Brunson and that the paperwork had been started for the 6-foot-3 guard to attend Boston College beginning next fall. "Ricky called and said he was coming," O'Brien said. "Right now, it's in the hands of the athletic directors and our admissions people. But I don't really see anything that could hold it up. " Brunson could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Rick Brunson, the 6-3 freshman guard who last week informed Temple coach John Chaney that he was leaving the Owls' basketball program, looks as if he will transfer to Boston College as expected. "The Boston College people have contacted us," Temple athletic director Charlie Theokas said yesterday. "And we have given them permission to talk to (Brunson). Once we received a formal letter from (Boston College), now it's up to them as to what they're going to do. But it seems to me that it's going that way. Villanova athletic director Gene DeFilippo has been mentioned in the past year for the AD job at several schools, including Vanderbilt and North Carolina. Rumors abounded he was leaving for this or that school. DeFilippo denied all the rumors. Recently, DeFilippo's name was mentioned for the Boston College job. Even three weeks ago, he said he was happy at Villanova and had no plans to go anywhere. Yesterday, DeFilippo was introduced as Boston College's new AD. "I leave Villanova University with mixed emotions," DeFilippo said in a statement released by Villanova.
