BRAD PITT surprised sneak peekers at an early screening of "World War Z" in King of Prussia Regal Cinemas yesterday. My sources tell me Pitt introduced the film to two theaters and then hopped on a plane to his next locale so, unfortunately, he didn't get to hang around town. This town has changed a lot since Pitt shot "12 Monkeys" here back in 1995. "I just crushed a cheesesteak next door," Pitt told the audiences yesterday. "It really is the perfect sandwich. " Pitt continued that he was excited for fans to see the film.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I spend a lot of time watching "Greatest Tank Battles" on AHC. No more than 10 hours a week, though. No wait, more like 15. OK, 20. And I can quit anytime I want. Maybe next week. This week I have "Fury," the (literally) eye-popping World War II movie about a tank crew on a suicide mission. It's written and directed by David Ayer, who's apparently a bit of a wild man - he encourages his cast to do a little light sparring before work. That's how he ended up smashing Jon Bernthal's nose while shooting "Fury," prompting producers to issue the "Anchorman" like caveat - no touching of the face or hair - when star Brad Pitt came on set. He's known for the high energy, honest pulp of "Training Day" and "Street Kings," so you wonder what he'd bring to the modern war movie, territory mined so well by Spielberg ("Saving Private Ryan")

TORONTO - Brad Pitt knows the parallels are obvious: baseball and the movie biz - two industries where the complex algorithms of stats and star power, home runs and box-office hits, are endlessly worked on and worried over. Old ways of doing business, based on gut instinct and high-priced players, give way to leaner, meaner, formula-driven concepts - on the playing field, and on the screen. "Especially in today's economically challenged times, you see the tendency of the studios to try to mitigate losses and therefore manage it in a way that's based on numbers," Pitt says.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and other red-carpet veterans joined some Hollywood newcomers in the Southern California desert this weekend to kick off the two-month-long movie-award season at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. "When you're of age: drink," Clooney noted to the newbies at Saturday night's gala awards ceremony. "That's good advice to pretty much anybody. " Clooney, star of "The Descendants" and "The Ides of March," was given the festival's "Chairman's Award" for acting, directing, producing and writing.

Baubles, bangles, Brad Let no one ever call Brad Pitt cheap. Not after he dropped 12 grand to buy Valentine's trinkets for daughters Zahara , 9, Shiloh , 7, and Vivienne , 5, according to a report by Life & Style Weekly. L&SW quotes an Insider on its website as saying, "Brad requested three Neil Lane diamond heart necklaces, totaling $12,000, for his daughters for Valentine's Day. " Makes you wonder what he got for Angelina Jolie . Rapper remorseful Drake says he's sorry he got all, you know, upset about Rolling Stone's replacing him on the cover of its new issue with the recently deceased Philip Seymour Hoffman , the Associated Press reports.

Billboard: Taylor Swift's our dame Guess someone likes the twerk. Billboard on Friday crowned twerkedelic "Shake it Off" shaker Taylor Swift its Woman of the Year for her role in shaping, changing, and influencing music. It's a game of numbers: "Over the course of her career, she's charted 60 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 . . . "WORLD War Z" introduces us to a new theory of evolution: Survival of the Pittest. Apparently, when a plague erupts, certain movie-star people have a competitive . . . Bradvantage. For example: In the movie's first scene, Brad Pitt is driving his family through downtown Philadelphia when suddenly there's a zombie outbreak (or a really out-of-control Mummers parade). Panic creates gridlock, broken by a runaway dump truck that smashes its way through (and over) the terrified throng of motorists.

Working like a Bieber If we were Justin Bieber - and we're not - we might think twice before hitting Brazil again. First, he's seen sneaking into and out of a bordello. Tourism? Business? A mistake, his minders say - he thought it was a "private members club. " [Your comment here.] [We have no comment.] Next, he's hit by a fan-thrown water bottle during a São Paulo concert, storms off, comes back, moves on to Rio, and it's all muito bem . "Brazil goes hard," he tweeted. [Your comment here.]
