The Phantoms scored four power-play goals and crushed the Norfolk Admirals, 8-2, in an AHL game last night. Vaclav Pletka scored a power-play goal early in the second period that proved to be the game winner. The Phantoms had jumped out to a 2-0 lead early, on goals by Mark Freer and Michel Picard. Freer lifted a perfect wrist shot over goalie Michel Laroque's shoulder on the first shot of the game, and Picard scored on a nice move after a pass from Petr Hubacek. The lead did not last, however, as Norfolk came back in the final 10 minutes of the period.

IN JOEY Bishop's obituary, you quote Jerry Blavat as saying, "He never used dirt or smut in his acts. Today, you can't do that. Don Rickles is the only one left, and he's 80. " Plenty of comics work clean. I produce a clean comedy show, the Ivy League Comedy Showcase. To name some prominent comedians who work clean: Bill Cosby, Brian Regan, Jim Gaffigan. Jay Leno does 10 clean minutes of television five nights a week. Perhaps you've heard of Jerry Seinfeld? Ellen DeGeneres?

Alyn McCauley and Alex Ponikarovsky scored in the third period as the St. John's Maple Leafs scored five unanswered goals to defeat the Phantoms, 5-1, last night at the First Union Spectrum. The Phantoms, whose winless streak reached eight games (0-6-1-1), went on a power play less than a minute into the game. Derek Plante fed the puck to Mark Freer, and he found Mark Greig alone in front. Greig fired the puck into the net for his 16th goal. Don MacLean tied the score in the first period with an unassisted goal.

Joe DiPenta isn't with the Phantoms to score goals, but with the team depleted by injuries and call-ups, he picked a good time to start. The rookie defenseman scored his first career goal, off a faceoff during a power play, with 7:03 remaining to give the Phantoms a 3-2 win over the Portland Pirates on Saturday afternoon at the First Union Center. The attendance of 18,202 was the third highest in Phantoms' history, and fifth all-time in AHL history. "We hit a bad spell for a while, but we're breaking out of it nicely," said Phantoms coach John Stevens, whose team won its third in a row following a nine-game winless streak.

Brian Regan stopped 46 shots and Mark Freer had two goals and an assist as the Phantoms defeated the Norfolk Admirals, 4-1, in an American Hockey League game last night. Late in the first period, with the score tied at 1-1, the Phantoms took advantage of a turnover in the Norfolk zone. Freer intercepted a pass and shot it on net. The puck rebounded off Norfolk goaltender Jeff Maund to Vaclav Pletka, who banged it home. Regan was outstanding in goal for the Phantoms, finishing just one save shy of the team record.

The Rochester Americans scored two shorthanded goals in the third period as they came back to defeat the Phantoms, 4-3, in an American Hockey League game last night at the First Union Spectrum. The loss snapped a three-game Phantoms winning streak. With the Phantoms clinging to a one-goal lead in the final period, Rochester winger Dane Jackson went to the penalty box for four minutes for high-sticking and unsportsmanlike conduct. It appeared to be a good opportunity for the Phantoms to boost their lead, but it was Rochester that found the net. Brian Campbell delivered on a wrist shot and Chris Taylor scored on a two-on-one.

Mark Freer broke a 4-4 tie in the third period last night with his 24th goal of the season, leading the Phantoms past the Hershey Bears, 6-4, in an American Hockey League game at the Hersheypark Arena. Freer went streaking down the ice on an odd-man rush. His shot on Bears goalie Frederic Cassivi found its way past the short side. Kirby Law added an empty-net goal for the Phantoms, who rallied from a 4-2 deficit. Steve Washburn collected a goal and two assists for the Phantoms.

Neil Little stopped 36 shots in recording his second consecutive shutout, and two players scored their first goals as Phantoms in a 3-0 American Hockey League win last night over the Quebec Citadelles in Quebec. Little's shutout streak now stands at 164 minutes, 27 seconds. The streak dates back to the first period of the game in Hershey on Saturday. The franchise record, set earlier this season by Brian Regan, is 182:33. Little's toughest saves came in the first period when Quebec had four power plays.

Brian Regan lets his haircut do the talking. In anticipation of the last game of his career, the Cherry Hill East running back is sporting a red-tinged Mohawk with a star carved into one side of his head and racing stripes on the other. "I had to do something special," Regan said as Cherry Hill East prepared for Wednesday night's showdown with Cherry Hill West in the annual crosstown Thanksgiving weekend game. Coiffure aside, Regan isn't loud, flashy, or demonstrative.

The football playoffs can be a magical place filled with endless possibilities. Sometimes, the regular season can be like that, too. Or even better. Sometimes, the regular season can feature a game with two unstoppable offenses, two irresistible running backs, 16 touchdowns, 113 points, one daring decision, and a fittingly fantastic finish. "This was our playoff game," Cherry Hill East senior quarterback Jesse Gold said. "I'll take it. " Cherry Hill East (5-3)

The undefeated Cherry Hill East football team had more than host Winslow Township to worry about Saturday in Atco. Complacency could have been more of an adversary than the talented but winless Winslow players in a West Jersey Football National Division game. However, the Cougars went about their business in a workmanlike manner and defeated Winslow, 41-6, for their third consecutive victory and second in the division. Big plays by Brian Regan, Jesse Gold, Robert Taylor, Colin Roualet, and Isaiah Milligan-Smith carried the Cougars.

Someone once said that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. If that's the case, Cherry Hill East had luck on its side Saturday in a West Jersey Football League interdivisional battle with visiting Washington Township. East capitalized on breaks of its own making as well as those given by the Minutemen to register a 31-27 victory, its second consecutive win of the young season. "Sometimes you get the good luck, and sometimes you don't," said East fullback Brian Regan, who scored the Cougars' final touchdown on a 3-yard run in the final minutes.
