There have been moments, sometimes lasting years, when Britney Spears has seemed like an accessory to her own career - the public face of a vast army of producers, songwriters, choreographers, stylists, publicity agents, and marketing executives. But holding together that tangle of competing agendas is no easy task. Part of what great pop stars do is provide a sense of continuity, using the force of their personality to bridge the gaps between trends. It cannot be an easy job, and six weeks into her Femme Fatale tour, even Britney Spears looked as though she was tired of being Britney Spears.

Glory (RCA ***) Coupled with her Las Vegas residency and this fun and fizzy dance-pop album, a welcome improvement after 2013's desultory Britney Jean, last weekend's MTV Video Music Awards were supposed to be a platform for Britney Spears' big comeback. It didn't quite work out that way: Though not nearly such a train wreck as the 2007 showing that seemed to sound a death knell for her career, this time around, the onetime VMA snake handler was stiff on stage and awkward in her exchanges with lanky white rapper G-Eazy.

A PHILLY-born-and-trained dancer is suing Britney Spears and Reign Deer Entertainment for allegedly breaking her nose. Dawn Noel Pignuola , who dances professionally as Dawn Noel, was hired to work on "Work Bitch," Spears' incessantly catchy single, according to a lawsuit filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Pignuola attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts and the University of the Arts, getting her start in the dance world at Philly's Koresh Dance Company.

It's official! Fox on Monday announced what we've all known for weeks: Britney Spears will be a judge on season two of The X Factor. The network made a big to-do about it, trotting out (like so much overpaid cattle) Brit, 30, and a second hire, multitalented youngster Demi Lovato, 19. They will join show czar Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid this fall at the judges' table. The gals uttered words such as excited and thrilled. (Brit better be happy: She reportedly will pocket $15 mil just for one season!

The other day, while leafing through a Sunday newspaper's entertainment section, I came across an overwhelming full-page ad promoting two concerts by Britney Spears. While the name was vaguely familiar (I do have grandchildren who qualify for teenybopper status), I didn't recall ever having seen Spears. Staring back at me from the page was a 19-year-old woman wearing a jersey that stopped about a foot above her jeans, and jeans that began a foot below where modesty suggested they should have.

ALTHOUGH IT'S UNCLEAR whether Britney Spears has ever read a novel, the Hollywood Reporter says she's in discussions to write one. Following many Americans' obsession with celebrity, the publishing industry has essentially given up on actual writers in favor of "names" - thus have come novels by Lauren Conrad , Bethenny Frankel , Snooki and more. Britney's book would reportedly be a fictionalized account of portions of her own life, from child star to jailbait to bald umbrella-wielding hot mess to judge.

Switching between late-night talk shows a few years ago, I came upon Kinky Friedman holding forth on his concept of "space takers. " As the Texas mystery novelist and satiric songwriter explained, a "space taker" is a ubiquitous somebody who occupies a far greater chunk of the cultural universe than his talents merit. People, in Friedman's view, like Garth Brooks, John Grisham, and the topic of today's discussion, Britney Spears. Spears, in case you haven't heard, is - once again - back.

REPORTEDLY drinking a bit in Vegas over the New Year's weekend - and maybe disappointed by the not-quite-up-to-snuff sales of her latest album - Britney Spears did what any New Age pop tart would: She ran out and got hitched to a hometown pal who had never previously figured in her romantic plans. And when she woke up and realized what she'd done . . . she called in her lawyers for an insta-annulment. Sigh. She may never make it to music immortality - but this is sure a stunt worthy of the Marriage Hall of Shame.

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears said Friday that she has made the "difficult decision" to leave Fox's "The X Factor" after one season. In a statement, the pop singer said that she had an incredible time working on the singing contest but that it was time to get back into the studio to record. It was widely reported Thursday that Spears and "X Factor" were parting ways after a season in which the show's ratings fell and Spears received lackluster reviews as a panelist. Britney Spears paid a visit to the First Union Center on Monday night, and the runway show did not disappoint. The pop princess opened with a beguiling little number in sequined black, reminiscent of an Elvis jumpsuit, but showing more skin than the King would have dared. Sequins were the theme of the concert, delicately balanced by an abundance of midriff and cleavage. Halfway through the collection, Spears paraded around in a hat that easily could have doubled as a dark-chocolate cake topped with strawberry frosting.

The greatest cultural honor! Mattel, that force for all good things in culture, is celebrating Misty Copeland the only way it knows: The toy giant has released a Barbie doll based on the ballerina, named Misty Barbie . The Boss pens kids' book His medium has been song verse, but Bruce Springsteen has always been a master storyteller. So it makes sense he would write a book. What's surprising is that it's a story for kids. The New York Times reports that Simon & Schuster on Nov. 4 will release the Boss' first children's book, Outlaw Pete . Based on the song of the same name from Springsteen's '09 LP Working on a Dream and intended for kids of all ages, it's about a little boy bank robber who repents his criminal ways.

Britney's back! Britney Spears popped up Friday in Las Vegas with a show that looks a lot like the eye-popping Cirque du Soleil productions on the Strip (acrobatics, confetti, ring of fire), plus frenetic costume changes, her live band, and herself, often airborne. The debut of her 50-show-a-year 2014-15 Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino gig kept a young-for-Vegas audience of 4,500 on its feet for 90 minutes. Selena Gomez , Miley Cyrus , and Katy Perry were there to lend support to the 32-year-old Spears, who handled the physically grueling nonstop movement with aplomb and musical polish.

IT TURNS out that "Captain Phillips" didn't need the U.S. Navy to defeat a small band of Somali pirates. All he needed was Britney Spears . London's Daily Mirror reports that Britney's hits are being blasted at the seafaring Somalis because they can't stand her music. Or it's a clever lure to her upcoming Las Vegas show. "Baby One More Time" and "Oops! I Did It Again" appear to be the most effective sonic weapons. "These guys can't stand Western culture or music, making Britney's hits perfect," said merchant naval officer Rachel Owens . Or maybe they just don't like old Britney.

Confusing pick Let me get this straight, Inquirer Editorial Board ("Reelect Christie," Oct. 20). You state that Christie 1) wrongly demonized teachers; 2) abandoned a school-aid formula that attached funding to at-risk children; 3) should forget an income-tax cut that would favor the wealthy and unnecessarily reduce state revenue; 4) is retrograde in his opposition to same-sex marriage and funding for Planned Parenthood; 5) should improve his poor environmental record; and 6) has shown an unfortunate tendency to be self-serving.
