Highland offensive tackle Ahmaad Randall sees Rhode Island as a football program on the rise. "They're up and coming," Randall said. "I want to be a part of that. " Randall, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound athlete, committed Monday night to Rhode Island on a football scholarship. He made his decision after visiting the school in Kingston, R.I., last weekend. "Unbeatable coaching staff," Randall said. "That mixed with the academics made it the place for me. " Randall said he plans to pursue a degree in engineering.

AROUND THE CITY OUTMUSCLED IN LEWISBURG When La Salle loses this season, it will likely be when it runs up against a big, experienced well-coached front line, just like it did at Bucknell. The Bison (9-1) got 36 points and 19 rebounds from bigs Mike Muscala and Joe Willman, led by 14 points early in the second half, repelled several La Salle rallies and won, 74-66. THE NUMBERS La Salle (6-2) shot just 38.7 percent to 50 percent for Bucknell. The Explorers had just six turnovers, but had only three assists.

* La Salle is at Bucknell on Saturday in an interesting matchup between one-loss teams that are very efficient on offense - Bucknell scores 1.09 points per possession (35th in Division I) while La Salle is at 1.08 PPP (47th). * Villanova is maximizing its chances by getting to the foul line (287 attempts) while doing a decent job of not fouling (234 attempts). The Wildcats host Delaware on Sunday. Monte Ross' team is way better than its 3-7 record, but has been hurt by a brutal schedule and injuries.

LEWISBURG - Bucknell's big men were too much for La Salle on Saturday night. Center Mike Muscala and forward Joe Willman each scored 18 points as the host Bison beat the Explorers, 74-66, in a nonconference game at Sojka Pavilion. The loss snapped La Salle's five-game winning streak. "We lost to a very good team," said La Salle coach John Giannini, whose team beat the Bison last season. "We pressured them hard. [But] the pressure didn't bother them. " Ramon Galloway scored a game-high 21 points for the Explorers (6-2)

Before he could become fully adjusted to the game speed of Penn State basketball and prepare for competition in the rugged Big Ten, D.J. Newbill found himself gaining additional responsibilities. With the season-ending injury to senior Tim Frazier, an all-conference selection last season who suffered a ruptured left Achilles tendon on Nov. 18, Newbill took over at point guard for the Nittany Lions. The position presents new challenges for the Strawberry Mansion High graduate. The 6-foot-4 sophomore got his first taste of the point Friday in a victory over Bucknell.

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany - In Kevin Ollie's first game as Connecticut's head coach, Shabazz Napier scored 25 points as the Huskies upset No. 14 Michigan State, 66-62, Friday night in the Armed Forces Classic. UConn led most of the way and by as many as 16 points in the first half of the game, which was played in a hangar at the United States' Ramstein Air Base here. The Spartans hit just one of their first eight shots, while Connecticut made nine of its first 10 as it raced out to a 20-6 lead.

MICHIGAN WON the varsity eight heavyweight race to capture the men's team point trophy championship at the 74th Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday. Michigan finished in 5:58.604. Florida Institute of Technology was second in 5:58.946. Drexel (6:02.401) finished third and Temple (6:06.266) took fifth. Duke won the women's heavyweight eight championship in 06:43.796. Bucknell finished second in 6:44.037 and won the overall women's team point trophy.

During two days of competing in the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, Purdue had to endure "a lot of hiccups," in the words of its coach. The Boilermakers sat their No. 3 seat on the men's varsity eight boat because of illness. They brought up a substitute from the junior varsity, which affected the JV. And in the varsity eight race, their boat struck a log in the river, knocking off the rudder and forcing the coxswain to stick his arm into the Schuylkill to make the turn at the Strawberry Mansion Bridge.

University of the Sciences junior Dan McMahon was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference pitcher of the year on Tuesday, in voting by the league's head coaches. The righthander from Millville High School led the CACC in strikeouts (76), complete games (5) and innings pitched (86.2), and tied for the league lead with seven wins. He was named first-team all-CACC for the second time. St. Joseph's outfielder Ryan Pater , a freshman from Central Bucks East, was named the Big Five player of the week.

MIKE MUSCALA had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead visiting Bucknell to a 65-54 win over Arizona last night in the opening round of the NIT. Joe Willman had 15 points and Bryson Johnson added 14 for Bucknell (25-9), which dominated from the opening tip. "Going into tonight's game I was confident," said Muscala. "I made sure to tell the others to be confident as well. Coach prepared our team for tonight by making sure he kept our team calm and composed. " Bucknell held Arizona in check, leading by as many as 13 in the first half.
