ATLANTA FALCONS quarterback Matt Ryan sprained his left shoulder in the closing minutes of the NFC Championship Game and won't be able to play in Sunday's Pro Bowl. Coach Mike Smith said Ryan will need 3 to 4 weeks to recover from the injury, which was described as a sprained AC joint to the non-throwing shoulder. No surgery is required. Ryan was hurt just after the 2-minute warning. On a 5-yard pass that Jason Snelling took down to the San Francisco 10, linebacker Ahmad Brooks got a shot on the Atlanta quarterback.

All the medical terms associated with Robert Griffin III's knee injury can be boiled down to one simple message: It's not too bad. Beyond that, there are still some very important unknowns. The NFL's top-rated quarterback might or might not play Sunday when the Washington Redskins visit the Cleveland Browns. Coach Mike Shanahan, knowing full well that it makes the other team work extra to prepare for two quarterbacks, will no doubt wait as long as possible to publicly commit one way or the other to Griffin or fellow rookie Kirk Cousins.

Jim Caldwell is back in the NFL, this time as the Baltimore Ravens' quarterbacks coach. The 57-year-old Caldwell was hired yesterday, less than 2 weeks after he was fired as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts following a 2-14 season. Caldwell went 26-22 in 3 years with Indianapolis, including a Super Bowl appearance. After working with Colts standout quarterback Peyton Manning for 10 seasons, Caldwell will turn his attention toward improving Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and teaming with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron to strengthen Baltimore's passing game, which ranked 19th this season.

On this, the Eagles' players did not differ. John Harbaugh's tongue was legendary. In an instant, he could turn from that pleasant-looking, mild-mannered Midwestern guy into an unforgiving, tyrannical coach who neither spared feelings nor minced words. Any imperfection, big or little, from a missed assignment to questionable effort, would unleash the beast. Harbaugh, a former Eagles assistant, is in his first season as the Baltimore Ravens' head coach. "But we all mend," he said.

Bears (+10) over VIKINGS This selection is not so much about the talent on the field, but more about the mind-set off the field. In the last game between these ancient rivals from the old Black & Blue division, Minnesota posted a 34-31 victory at Chicago, but it wasn't so much the score, as the phenomenal rushing effort of Vikings rookie Adrian Peterson. In only his fifth game, Peterson rumbled for 224 yards, scoring touchdowns on runs of 67, 73 and 35 yards. That was the most yards the Bears defense has given up, ever!

Ricky Williams' reinstatement is complete, with the Miami Dolphins saying they'll welcome him back on the field beginning Monday - the day after they face the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. First-year coach Cam Cameron decided to let Williams rejoin the team after they met yesterday. The NFL lifted Williams' 1 1/2-year suspension Wednesday. "The meeting was positive," Cameron said. "He'll be a member of this team and will start with us Monday. He's a Miami Dolphin. " For months, Cameron had been mum regarding whether he would want Williams.

Ricky Williams' suspension ended after more than 18 months when he was reinstated yesterday by the NFL, and the winless Dolphins might welcome him back. The 2002 league rushing champion was scheduled to fly to Miami for a physical today and meet with coach Cam Cameron, said Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg. The first-year coach, whose team is 0-9, said he talked with Williams by phone for "5 or 6 minutes" yesterday, but hadn't made a decision about activating him. "I want to see where he is, and also let him know where we're headed, and we'll go from there," Cameron said.

Don Shula and his 1972 Miami Dolphins ran off 17 straight wins, the only team in NFL history to run the table. Cam Cameron and his 2007 Dolphins? They're getting closer and closer to running the table in the other direction. The Dolphins - the league's only winless team - controlled the ball for nearly 37 minutes and led most of the game yesterday, but Rian Lindell kicked a 34-yard field goal with 46 seconds left, and visiting Buffalo earned its fourth consecutive victory, 13-10.

Joey Porter wasn't unemployed for long. The trash-talking linebacker, cut last week by Pittsburgh to save salary-cap room, agreed to a 5-year, $32 million contract with Miami, giving the Dolphins a potentially devastating pass rushing tandem with Jason Taylor, the defensive player of the year. Porter is guaranteed $20 million in the deal, which was agreed to late Monday, a source said. He has not yet passed his physical and the contract might not be signed until today or tomorrow.

The Miami Dolphins named San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron as their head coach yesterday. Cameron, 45, received a four-year contract to become the Dolphins' seventh coach, the team said in a statement posted on its Web site. Financial terms were not disclosed. Nick Saban left Miami to coach the University of Alabama on Jan. 3. The Dolphins were 6-10 this season. The Chargers led the 32-team NFL with 492 points and were fourth in offense during the 2006 season before losing Sunday in the playoffs to the New England Patriots, 24-21.
