Is Cam Newton the most frustrating quarterback in Fantasyland? Not to me. Not anymore, at least. You see, I drafted him last year, on the heels of his stellar rookie campaign. Newton got off to a slow start, accumulating just 10 total TDs over the first half of the 2012 season with relatively modest passing and rushing statistics to offset his scoring deficit. In fact, through his first eight games, Newton had amassed 464 fewer yards and eight fewer TDs in 2012 vs. 2011. To be sure, he came on fairly strong over the second half; but I had long stopped risking him in my starting lineup by then.

The NFL has a burgeoning super star on its hands in Cam Newton. The No. 1 overall pick in the April draft and Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn threw for an NFL rookie record 432 yards and a touchdown in Carolina's 30-23 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. That followed his 422-yard performance - a league record for a quarterback in his pro debut - in last week's loss at Arizona. Newton briefly held the NFL record for most passing yards in the first two games of the season by any quarterback (854)

I don't know if anyone else picked up on this, but glancing through the Super Bowl coverage leading up to Sunday's big game, I discovered last week that Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is African-American. This came as a big shock, as you might imagine, and must have been to a lot of other people as well, because there were news stories and columns and TV live shots, and all of them confirmed it, including Cam himself. "I've said this since Day One - I'm an African-American quarterback," Newton said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - When the Eagles played the Carolina Panthers last season, and beat them handily, Cam Newton was a frozen husk of the quarterback he can be. He had undergone ankle surgery during the spring of 2014, and the rehabilitation and recovery had left him stationary, had confined him to the pocket, and the Eagles took advantage of their good fortune. They sacked him nine times, intercepted him three times, and won by 24 points. That Cam Newton did not show up to Bank of America Stadium on Sunday night, as glad as the Eagles would have been to see him. This time, Newton was healthy.

Here are my picks to roll, and get rolled, in Week 10 of the 2014 season. Watch 'em roll Cam Newton, QB, Panthers at Eagles. In a week when three star QBs are idle, Newton offers hope. Though he hasn't had a TD strike since Week 7, he ran one in last week and he'll be facing a very hospitable Philly defense. Newton is hard to trust, but he always manages to rebound. Why not under the Monday night lights? Justin Forsett, RB, Ravens vs. Titans. Forsett leads Baltimore's two- or three-headed (depending on the whims of his coaches)

The same discussions the Eagles are having this week about how to defend Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton happened last November when the Panthers visited Philadelphia. Defensive coordinator Bill Davis decided to use a spy on the 6-foot-5, 245-pound quarterback. That spy was linebacker Connor Barwin, who at 6-4 and 264 pounds has the size to match up with Newton. The result was one of the best games of Barwin's career. He finished with 31/2 sacks in a 45-21 win in which Newton was sacked nine times and rushed for only 6 yards.

Here is Domo's report card for the Eagles-Panthers game. Click here to send in your own grades. RUSHING OFFENSE: Ryan Mathews had a 63-yard touchdown run and the Eagles ran for 177 yards on 30 carries. DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews combined for 68 yard on 12 carries. GRADE: B-plus PASSING OFFENSE: Sam Bradford's receivers had at least six drops that killed potential scoring drives. Bradford was sacked five times. He was effective with short and intermediate throws, but had just one completion of longer than 20 yards.

THOSE PREFERRING to wait to grab their quarterback have some delightful options. While the usual suspects are still in play (Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning), a couple of kids are starting to become fantasy relevant. Sam Bradford? Maybe as bye-week replacement. Blake Bortles, Jaguars: Love his weapons, and he had a strong preseason. Has played his way into a starter in 10- and 12-team leagues. Tom Brady, Patriots: Suspended the first four games, which has dropped his average draft position in CBS Sports leagues to 57. In ESPN leagues, it's 60. Drew Brees, Saints: Even though his numbers continue to decline from 2011, when he had 5,476 yards and 46 TDs, they have not slid enough to knock him out of the top-seven in fantasy.

THE 17TH EDITION of Brady-Manning is fun, but making some cash off it would be even better. As we dwindle down to three games left in the fantasy gambling season, here are some thoughts. The first is that if you're thinking about putting money on the Pro Bowl, give me a call at 1-800-GAMBLER. Tom Brady has no running game to speak of and could chuck 50 times. Obviously, the personnel varies, but in six games against defenses coached by Wade Phillips, Brady is 5-1, with 17 touchdown passes and four interceptions.

Carson Wentz suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs in the Eagles' preseason opener Thursday. There is no exact timetable for his return, but the team hopes to have Wentz back "before the end of the preseason. " Wentz felt discomfort and soreness early in practice on Saturday. He did not participate in team drills, watching practice in uniform while the Eagles used their other three quarterbacks. He underwent a CT scan Saturday afternoon, when the injury was discovered. Wentz hurt his ribs when he was hit there by Buccaneers linebacker Micah Awe on his second-to-last play in the fourth quarter.

A RUN OF four road games in five weeks that immediately follows the early Week 4 bye, and a Monday night visit from Aaron Rodgers and the Packers highlight the Eagles' 2016 schedule. Oh, and the Cowboys come to town on New Year's Day when the Mummers certainly will be on their best behavior. If Doug Pederson keeps the team in contention, it could be an interesting holiday season as the Birds host each of their three NFC East opponents over the final four weeks. The only exception is a Week 15 trip down I-95 to visit the Baltimore Ravens.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Peyton Manning got his second Super Bowl ring. Now he can ride off into the sunset a winner. But it was the Broncos defense - and in particular Von Miller - that provided the venerable quarterback with a Hallmark ending to his career. The Broncos badgered, battered, and bloodied Cam Newton for nearly 60 minutes Sunday night as they put the 26-year-old Panthers quarterback's coronation on hold for at least one year. They survived the ineptness of their own offense and their Hall of Fame quarterback and cemented their place in NFL history as one of the league's greatest defenses with a 24-10 win in Super Bowl 50 for their third championship.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Super Bowl week reinforced the differences between Cam Newton and Peyton Manning, a study in contrasts at quarterback that has some marking Sunday's game as old school vs. new school, the future vs. the past. Newton, the Carolina Panthers star, remained unapologetically extroverted. He walked off the plane at San Jose International wearing black-and- gold-striped Versace pants. He flashed his smile hundreds of times during media night despite mundane and repetitive questions.

JEFF McLANE Staff Writer One of the common refrains heard here in the Bay Area in the lead-up to Super Bowl 50 is that if it is a blowout the Panthers will win and if it is a nail-biter it will be the Broncos who come out on top. While it is true that the Panthers have more overall talent on both sides of the ball, it's not as if the Broncos are chumps. They had the No. 1 overall defense during the regular season and managed to make Tom Brady look ordinary in the AFC championship game.

Here is a look at the Panthers-Broncos Super Bowl matchup: When the Panthers have the ball With Cam Newton at quarterback, the Panthers led the NFL with 31.3 points per game this season and averaged 40 points in their two postseason games. The defense helps, but it's Newton's brilliance that is most responsible for the Panthers' scoring. He threw for 35 touchdowns and rushed for 10 scores during the regular season. His dual-threat ability is the most dangerous in the NFL. Newton's running is complemented by running back Jonathan Stewart, who had 989 rushing yards this season and is averaging five yards per carry during the playoffs.

SAN FRANCISCO - Corey Brown knows a lot of people don't hold the Carolina Panthers' wide receiving corps in high regard. And you know what? He doesn't really care. "We honestly didn't care what anybody had to say (about us)," the Cardinal O'Hara product said Wednesday before he and his teammates started preparations in earnest for their Super Bowl 50 battle with the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. "We haven't paid attention to any of that. We're not playing for the people who were saying we suck or whatever.
