When a big-time country act plays Atlantic City, the cowboy hats and pressed Wranglers can make it seem like you're really in the South, and not just South Jersey. But Stetsons were scarce at Carrie Underwood's show Friday at Caesars' spiffy Circus Maximus Theater, which has undergone a $9 million renovation in step with A.C.'s keeping up with the Borgata (and Pennsylvania slot parlors) vibe. This was an American Idol crowd that packed the 1,600-seat venue two years to the date since Underwood won the TV popularity contest.

Carrie Underwood's first album, 2005's Some Hearts, is the fastest-selling country debut in history. In her brief career, the 25-year-old American Idol winner, described as "a superstar who's won every award in sight," has hobnobbed with Ryan Seacrest and Oprah Winfrey, hugged African children on an A.I. charity special, and graced the covers of "just about every magazine out there," including Cosmopolitan, Entertainment Weekly and In Style. If by any chance her Philadelphia fans weren't familiar with these essential facts, those who gathered at the Liacouras Center on Sunday for a country-comes-to-North Philly concert with Underwood and boy-girl glossy foursome Little Big Town know them now. That's because they were treated to a self-celebrating video montage while Underwood was off on one of three costume changes - in this case, from a black-leather-boots-and-tights ensemble to a strapless blue evening gown - meant to show how far Underwood has risen, and how fast.

Carrie Underwood won the fourth season of American Idol back in 2005, but five superperforming LPs, a pile of Grammys, and numerous unforgettable singles later, you could argue that the 32-year-old sweetheart from Oklahoma is bigger than the show that gave her her start (as well as most of the other winners). She's the crossover country artist that could - à la Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, and Faith Hill. Last fall's Storyteller is just as charming as the rest of her discography - folksy, twangy, and hewing to some classic country tropes: trucks, jealousy, gossip, and revenge.

Can't anybody up here sing? No matter who is crowned at the end of tomorrow night's two-hour American Idol extravaganza - Bo Bice or Carrie Underwood, who face off for the last time at 8 tonight with three songs each - the winner will hail from the South or Southwest. For the fourth season in a row. In all that time, the only Yankee who was a serious Idol contender was our own Justin Guarini. And we all know what happened to him. So why don't we call it Dixie Idol and be done with it?

The American Idol judges may have favored Bo, but the voting audience disagreed. Carrie Underwood, a 22-year-old college senior from Oklahoma, was named the newest American Idol last night, defeating the Southern rocker Bo Bice in the show's finale. The Oklahoma native received more viewer votes than Bice, of Alabama, after Tuesday's final round, snaring the title and a guaranteed $1 million recording contract. More than 500 million votes were cast. Underwood became the third woman in four years to win the crown.

Lauren Alaina may have lost "American Idol" - but she still feels like a winner after singing with Carrie Underwood. "Carrie has been my idol since she was on this show in Scotty's position," Alaina told reporters in the press room after Wednesday night's show, in which Scotty McCreery was crowned the new Idol; a record 122 million votes were cast for the finale. Underwood won season 5 of the Fox hit. Performing with Underwood "was a dream come true," continued Alaina. "I love Carrie - she is amazing.

Update: The Fund's ticketleap site reports the tickets are sold out. Earlier story: Mayor Kenney has some tickets for the Boss, if you are interested. That's right - for Bruce Springsteen's sold-out concert at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday night. The city, at Kenney's impetus, donated the 18 seats in the mayor's box to the Fund for the School District of Philadelphia to sell. Kenney has said he wants the tickets - previously distributed among city employees, nonprofits, and other organizations - to bring in money for schools.

Amanda Bynes appeared in a Manhattan court Friday in a long, blond, moppy wig after being charged with pot possession after she (allegedly) tossed a bong out of a window in front of police officers. She was set free without bail and told to show up for a July 9 court date. It was a wonderfully bizarre day in the star's life. "It was just a vase," Bynes told cops, according to assistant district attorney Chikaelo Ibeabuchi . Foxnews.com says the former Nickelodeon darling was given a psych evaluation before she was released.

Day of D-D-Divorce!!! What was more remarkable Monday: the rumors that weren't true, or the truths that weren't just rumors? The world gasped to think that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith might actually be divorcing like everybody said they were. But, groan, no, they like each other, get away, yuck. But then the bombs rained down. Beloved country singer Reba McEntire and manager-producer guy Narvel Blackstock announced they were flingin' their rings into the volcano after more than 26 hitched years.

Bieber: Egg on his face The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department stormed Justin Bieber 's house Tuesday with a crack incursion team of 12 detectives and eight patrol cars, says FoxNews.com. They served the teenybopper a felony search warrant. Whoa! Felony ?! Heavy! What did they expect to find at Justin's pad? WMDs? Chemical weapons? A roving gang of R&B-humming bank robbers? NORMAN, OKLA. - A concert benefiting Oklahoma tornado victims has drawn some of the biggest names in country music, but with proceeds intended for charity it is not attracting scalpers hoping to prey on an unsuspecting public. Oklahoma natives Toby Keith and Garth Brooks are among the star-studded lineup planned for the Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert, at the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium tomorrow. Other performers include Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Sammy Hagar, Ronnie Dunn, Mel Tillis and John Anderson, as well as Carrie Underwood, who will perform via satellite from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.

She was sometimes shrill and her sparkly outfits were off-putting. Yet the screams of her devoted fans and the sight of those young girls in their Stetson-wearing glory made one thing clear (with apologies to Elvis Presley): 50 million pink-cowboy-hat-wearing Carrie Underwood fans can't be wrong. A near-capacity crowd of 19,500 of those fans jammed into the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday night. The blonder-than-blond country girl with the cool, clean voice has come a long way since winning American Idol 's Season 4, a victory she acknowledged as her platform to fame.
