Here's a closer look at three football games on Saturday, with predictions. Camden Catholic (1-0) at Gloucester Catholic (0-1), 10:30 a.m. The visiting Irish can get off to a fast start in their first season under new coach Nick Strom, thanks to a favorable schedule. Camden Catholic junior playmakers Tyree Rodgers and Jamal Parker led the way in a 38-3 win over Cumberland in the season opener. They will be tough for the rebuilding Rams to contain. Pick: Camden Catholic, 27-13.

The football season will start early for Holy Spirit and Cedar Creek. Every other South Jersey team will open the season next weekend, but the Spartans and Pirates will begin play this weekend with out-of-conference games against unfamiliar opponents. Holy Spirit, rebuilding after an 11-1 season in 2013, will play at Southeastern Pennsylvania power Malvern Prep on Friday night. Cedar Creek, which returns several key players from last year's 8-2 team, will host North Jersey Group 1 power Cedar Grove on Saturday afternoon.

Olivia Askin scored 13 points as Shawnee came from behind at No. 2 Rancocas Valley and stunned the defending state champions, 39-36, in a South Jersey Group 4 girls' basketball semifinal Saturday night. Nikola Williams added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the third-seeded Renegades.   S.J. Group 2 semifinals Lauryn Fields had 17 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals to help fourth-seeded Middle Township drop No. 1 Deptford, 49-27, on the road. Cedar Creek 64, Lower Cape May 39: Casey Thomas scored 14 for host No. 3 Cedar Creek, which held No. 7 Lower Cape May to 14 second-half points.

Damon "Doo Wop" Mitchell likes the "Southern hospitality" in Atlanta and the academic reputation of Georgia Tech's engineering program. But the athlete who has become the face of South Jersey's newest football program has decided to play for the Yellow Jackets for one reason: They recruited him as a quarterback. "They were the only school that, right from the start, said they wanted me as a quarterback," the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Mitchell said. "That meant a lot to me. " Georgia Tech runs a triple-option offense.
